Hunting in the Adirondack Mountains one year, I drove about a mile into the woods on a ''OLD'' logging rosd, set up my camp
for a week. Shot a decent Buck, and on the way out a huge Maple tree was blow down, blocking the road. There was no going around it, if I had
drove off this road, I would still be their. But, in the back of my Truck was my Homelite Hemi head 360 chain saw, and I cut this tree apart.
The tree was well over 30 inches in dia.Than goodness I had a 20in. bar. Even at home I carry a chain saw in my truck when ever I am at my farms.

I don't see any tire chains or tow straps in there Lloyd.

Several years ago, a work buddy and I went Spring Gobbler hunting at a spot I had never hunted. I was driving, and Al told me where to slow down to turn onto a logging road to get back in close to where we would set up. It had rained a lot the past few days. As I turned off the dirt road onto the logging road, my headlights shined on the surface, which was covered with water. I stopped. It literally looked like I was driving into a trout stream. I said, "I dunno Al... that looks awfully juicy."

Al said, "Don't worry about it, this logging road has a good solid base. We can go in about 1/2 mile to the log skidder turn-around." Well OK then, I hit it and got about 200 yards off the road before my truck was buried in mud. I turned to Al and said, "Good solid base my ass." Then it started raining again. We spent from 0:dark-thirty until noon working with a shovel, 2 ton chain come-a-long, tow straps, tire chains, etc. until we finally got on solid enough ground to get out. We were both soaked and covered in mud. We did no turkey hunting that day. And we both learned a universal truth... the best time to install tire chains is BEFORE you get stuck, not after you are buried in mud.

Harry:

I had been somewhat worried about that happening for years now. My late Father-in-law usually had an old Homelite blue & silver he carried around in his '79 2wd Ford pickup for years but with his passing that chainsaw somehow disappeared. I've had this old Huskvarna at home for many years now as well and finally brought it up with me last Fall.

Thank goodness I did (I do try to pay attention to my "gut" feelings anymore).

Jumper cables, chain saw, come along, ice scraper, probably teamed with a snow brush on the end you can’t see. All the necessities of outdoor life on the way to the always distant grouse hunting spot in northern Minnesota, from just after October 1st.

An early start to winter, always possible, will likely make the snow brush the most used component.

I only carry a NOCO jumper system. The rest is my shooting gear and items for a gun show. Don't get out in the woods much these days except for sporting clays. Different life styles I guess.

Lol. Growing up on the Prairies, lots of opportunities to get stuck beyond belief, winter or summer.

But a chain saw is just taking up room when there are no trees to be seen. Lol.

The roads in that forest are pretty good, well maintained, culverts that keep them from washing out, mostly. But, a couple of quick inches of snow followed by very cold temps (the cold is always behind the storm) can make the place treacherous. I’ve never needed them, but, there is a milk crate in the bed of my truck that has a collection of logging chains. I’ll bet it weighs 100 lbs, but, it is better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them.

Same as the skunk kit.

People get in over their heads from time to time. At night, once you are wet, and it is cold, it is pretty much over. Nobody is coming. Not until you are missing for a few days.

There are trails up there that are named for people who made some bad decisions. It can be very unforgiving.

Keith: Believe me, I have both in my old Dodge truck here in Colorado. Elk and deer hunting have very different requirements.

Bird hunting is downright civililized by comparison.
