Duckcrazy, I promise you, #4 steel or smaller will not damage a BSS with.018" or less chokes. I have proven such.

There are LOTS of threads regarding steel shot in BSS, and lots of...uh...bs
Miroku has not revealed the composition of the "Special Steel" barrels, but it is widely believed to be 4140 Chrome Moly.
And as observed the boxlock BSS is not a light-weight game gun.
Japan is not a member of CIP, but any Miroku sold in a CIP member nation must be proof tested to CIP standards, starting in 1969, though England did not become a signatory until 1980.
“Standard Proof” is for lead or steel - limited to no larger than 3.25 mm / U.S. No. 4s and max. fps 1,300.
As Stan observed, it is recommended to use choke no tighter than modified (unless using steel No. 7 target loads)

While I would never do this, I have a book written by Worth Mathewson entitled Big December Canvasbacks in which the author describes a L C Smith he used for many years with steel shot on the Pacific Northwest coastal region. Something minor went wrong with the gun and he took it to a gunsmith who told him the chokes were full and full. He also told him that the barrels had not been damaged by the steel shot. Point? Sometimes people obsess too much over the steel shot/old barrel deal. Prolly the same ones (like Ed, or is it Dirty Harry?) that decry shooting smokeless powder in damascus barrels.

Ed also thinks a BSS is a "collectible" gun. I don't. I've shot mine so much at ducks that it is off face. I keep a shim on the hook, and just keep on shooting my "collectible" BSS.

Stan, Every Body has their own opinion of things, If you have seen a 50 gallon barrel full of ''Blown'' Damascus barrels like I have ''SEEN'', YOU might change your opinion on shooting them.
As far as B-SS Browning's go, I think they are the ''Best'' double gun made in the last 50 years. The 30in. barrels ones are in ''High Demand''. At one time I taught Parker Repros were the 2nd. best made
double gun made in the last 50 years, ''NOT Any More''. Breaking Down,Barrel lugs falling off, Stocks Cracking in half, Trigger problems, just too many parts in them to go wrong. And not enough drop in the stocks.

That's pretty impressive - I would have thought that the BSS - as stout as they are - would be one of those guns you could shoot 1 1/2 ounces of rusty roofing nails out of for 100 years before it was loose.

You're using that gun the way it was meant to be used; I like to see that.

bss guns in fine condish seem to go up about ten percent a year...
