I have a Thomas Jackson hammered SxS that on the outside is in good shape with good wood. The problem is the barrel is well pitted, probably unsafe even with low pressure or black powder shells and is off face. Putting the gun on face isn't an issue. The gun was NOT as advertised as there was no mention of the gun being off face or the barrel being pitted.

Choice 1: Sell it as a wall hanger and take the $650 loss

Choice 2: Send it to Briley and have them put a set of tubes in the gun (if possible), if so what gauge 20, 28 or .410?

I'm leaning toward the 28 as the recoil of a 12 generally doesn't bother me, so getting a 20 seems pointless (and I can go down to a 7/8 load in the 12) and I lack the skill to run a .410. This would just be used for skeet sometimes.

What happened to a 3 day inspection?

I probably take the loss and move on.

Choice 3: Buy better guns.

Sorry. But, a gun purchased “as is” from an auction house very often ends up bringing a guy right where you are. Giving good money, after bad by having Briley put tubes in a beater makes much, much less sense that having Briley put tubes in a great gun.

Cut your loses, and move on. Anybody who has played this game has been where you are, some lessons cost $650. Some cost more.

Another point in favor of the 28 ga tubes is that they will be less likely to split at the chamber, as 20 ga tubes in a 12 ga gun are prone to do, as they have to make the 20's thinner. And for skeet 28 is plenty.

Move on, and next time don't buy clunkers. I looked at Birmingham-made 12ga keeper-grade BLNE. It is in very good mechanical order, 28" 1/2-1/4 chokes 2&3/4" 1&1/4" Birmingham Proof for $500+tax. Inexpensive and ammo for it can be bought at Walmart or Country Store in the boonies, very, very important.
