Probably not, but, people complain when they are the one owning the gun when it breaks. We can all understand that lots of things break, but, not many of those things require someone as talented as a garden variety Purdey mechanic.

Stan, you are blessed it would seem. I have seen more problems with SXS ejectors in other guys guns than you have had. I’m partial to these ejectors, myself, and just never saw the need for conventional ejectors on my hunting guns:

Gunter said that without the mainspring the Purdey is a wall-hanger. I think I'll give him a call and will ask him about the Purdey. I need to talk about the ejectors on my 1886 Reilly side-lever giving me problems (again). (And if I had my druthers when shooting a late 1800's SxS. . .I'd opt for extractors - never much liked stuff whizzing by my ear/I tend to duck).

SKB: Didn't realize Wm Evans had a "gun making" shop. Interesting.

I think ejectors have their place. So far, it just hasn’t been at my place.

Expensive junk. I like mine, I have to since I own several. But all English "Best" guns are expensive to repair.

I'm not a gunsmith - but can you modify the internals of a sidelock to accept other guns' parts - springs etc, that weren't made for the specific action? Perhaps by moving pins, etc? In other words can you jury-rig a late 1800's SxS bench-made action to accept others' parts? Hammers I can understand but how about internals? Might this be more viable than trying to recreate a mainspring over a year and a half?

There's the old expression, "if the mountain won't come to Mohammed, then Mohammed must come to the mountain". In otherwords.....if you can't get a mainspring to fit, can you modify the action to accept a different mainspring? (Putting a Mopar 426 carb onto a Ferrari?)

Fortunately, I don't have to ask myself that question. That's because I refuse to put myself in the circumstances that would require me to. There are better options, IMO.

While possible in theory I believe the specifics of the Beasley action requires a truly competent gunsmith versed in that specific action and skill.

Good news is over thousands of example the problem of broken springs is rare.
