A glorious 4th to all here across “the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

"At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.”

Abraham Lincoln

George Washington’s prayer at Valley Forge.
The Continental Army camped at Valley Forge from December 19, 1777 to June 19, 1778, under terrible conditions and without adequate supplies or shelter; while the British Army was quartering in civilian homes in Philadelphia. Possibly 2000 soldiers died of disease, malnutrition and exposure.
There is no record of the actual prayer; only a story told by Reverend Snowden in his “Diary and Remembrances”. Isaac Potts, a Quaker, a Tory, and a pacifist, was strolling through the woods in Valley Forge during the winter.
“I heard a plaintive sound as, of a man at prayer,” Potts said. “I tied my horse to a sapling and went quietly into the woods and to my astonishment I saw the great George Washington on his knees alone, with his sword on one side and his cocked hat on the other. He was at Prayer to the God of the Armies, beseeching to interpose with his Divine aid, as it was His crisis, and the cause of the country, of humanity, and of the world. Such a prayer I never heard from the lips of man. I left him alone praying. I went home and told my wife, ‘I saw a sight and heard today what I never saw or heard before,’ and just related to her what I had seen and heard and observed. We never thought a man could be a soldier and a Christian, but if there is one in the world, it is Washington. She also was astonished. We thought it was the cause of God, and America could prevail.”

Washington's prayer for the Nation from the closing paragraph of a letter to the Governors of the 13 states on the occasion of his retirement from command of the Continental Army and public life, June 8, 1783.
I now make it my earnest prayer, that God would have you, and the State over which you preside, in his holy protection, that he would incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to Government, to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow Citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the Field, and finally, that he would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all, to do Justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Charity, humility and pacific temper of mind, which were the Characteristicks of the Divine Author of our blessed Religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy Nation.

We were blessed to have Washington as our first President. He remains the standard to which all Presidents should aspire. Today we face the greatest threat to our country since the Civil War, and we have no leader like him or Lincoln to guide us. Nonetheless, I have faith that we can find our way back to a country Washington would be proud of. Long live the USA.

The greatest public declaration of a governing philosophy which inspired an epic struggle which in turn changed the world

It was followed 12 years later by the greatest governing document ever written.

Aristotle said it first: There are 3 kinds of ethical government and their degenerated forms: Monarchy (rule by one) degenerates into tyranny; Aristocracy (rule by a few) into oligarchy/kleptocracy; Polity (republic - rule by many) becomes democracy = violence/bloodshed and mob rule (think Robespierre).

The founders knew this and knew that no republic lasted very long. But, through intellect knowledge and compromise they devised a way to keep what happened to the French Revolution - the ideological overreach and fervor, the terror, the guillotine, the military takeover, the fall into imperial ambition - from happening here with checks and balances and a federal system. It's still working;

Happy birthday. Gene

Happy 4th of July, Lloyd!

An excellent day to up your game, in the pickle department:

These are in the refrigerated section, a true salt wash pickle. The Mount Olive people have likely just Bud light-ed themselves. History is what it is, whether you like it, or not.

Ribs and salmon over charcoal and pecan smoke, today. The Mrs just built a pot of my mom’s recipe potato salad, along with a Caesar salad, and her killer Colombian recipe shrimp cocktail. Guests at 3:00PM, truly, wish you were here.

Best,
Ted

Sure Bill, the country could use a slave owner, who constantly referenced the bible. I wonder if he would be tolerant in the mamdami vein, faith in communism.

Stars and Stripes forever. It is a fitting day to honor millions of European World Cup visitors, who proclaim non stop, that they were lied to about the US of A, by you and your pride buddy leaders.

Intellect, knowledge and compromise wouldn't have been enough. Those qualities were provided, and guided, by an Almighty God. It was God's will that our forefathers succeed, and it will be only by His will that we will remain.

Abandonment of faith in, and allegiance to, God will be the death knell of our nation.

May God bless America and those who defend her.

Most of us understand the Founding Fathers were men of their times, and must be viewed as such

George Washington's faith
https://www.thenewamerican.com/culture/history/item/25423-george-washington-s-christianity

But Jefferson and Franklin (Deists) and James Madison (Unitarian) fully believed in the providence of God in the founding of this nation.
John Adams was the closest to what today would be viewed as an Evangelical
"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

The bad news, and I don't know how much longer God is going to put up with us
