My amazement and admiration for the members with good gunstocking skills (particularly shotgun stocks and forends) is occasionally tinged with excruciating envy. Afraid I don't have that tune in my head as my one attempt at finishing a pre-inlet forend for a Fox BE did not produce an enviable let alone a utilitarian result. I did manage to make a set of grips for my Ruger Old Army yesterday at work. [img] [/img] I think the wood is Cocobolo; came from Atlantic Aviation when I worked there in the late seventies. Did final fit to the grip frame and finishing (yes, it's slackum oil) last nite and finished at 2:30 AM. This is obviously a show-n-tell but also need advice on a tie-rod. I don't want to rip the bolt and threaded bush out the original grips although they're nothing special. I stopped at the Tru-Value yesterday evening to see what they had in "sawbolts;" nothing but #10X24 in alumimum and the heads are gigantic. I can't find a source for grip hdware; thinking of steel or brass hexnut or knurled round nut and a roundhead bolt maybe 6 or 8X32. Also thought about buying a set of Ruger grips internet auction and stripping out the fasteners and the medallions. Advice appreciated. jack

Jack,
Very nice! I have a Ruger BH .45LC that Hamilton Bowen did a complete makeover on including case hardened frame. I opted to do the grips myself. I ordered a pair from Ruger's OEM supplier out east. I'm sorry but I don't recall their name. I called Ruger Customer Service and they gave me their name and number. You might try that route or Eagle Grips.
Nice job and good luck with the hardware.
P.S. You might try some Ren wax on the grips after they're thoroughly dry. I think you'd like the look (and if not, you can wipe with a little turpentine and slackum over it.)

Thanks Phil. How's your slackum mixture working? What guns do you use it on? I also have an old model Vaquero in .45 Colt. Good deal on one from a pair of CAS guns. A major lead removal job and not a one-holer with 200gr roundheads but a second-childhood (or maybe the first) purchase I guess. I may have been the first one to shoot my '73 Old Army. It definitely likes a lot of holes bunched together. Did my homework and comletely dissassembled and stripped off all petroleum lube (except for trigger) before I shot it. Using home-made felt overpowder lube wads (beeswax, parafine, and neatsfoot oil) which certainly work to reduce bore fouling without taking a bath in dirty Crisco. I'm also looking for capgun roll caps which have enuf punch to ignite bp in Forster Tap-O-Cap coke can percussion caps. So far haven't had success finding. Queried Forster; told them I loved the idea but without a source of good caps the thing is a 20$ paperwgt. Got back a nice response; said they were on it. Same query to the retailer Midsouth; they said I should try Toys 'R Us. Bad idea. Toys R is so PC they probably don't sell squirt guns for fear kids will catch cold!

Brownells carries escutcheon screws for grips.

Thanks. Kutter, the PM isn't functioning on my end either. I'll take a look at Brownell catalog and try PM tomorrow. Maybe we can trade for some of this wood . . . or? It is really only good for grips as the largest chunk is 4/4X6X10. Some of it shows face grain and some is quarter sawn as in photo.

Oh, they're yours for free if you want them. Two different styles, 2 sets each. From the small envelope labled 'Ruger Grips', I'm taking a big chance in assuming that's what they're from! Got them some years ago with some other parts accumulations. I think there's a set of medallions in there too. Yours also if you want to go all out... Nice job on the grips BTW! > > Your P/M just came thru..email sent..

I have gotten escutcheons, screws, and bushings from Brownells and Ajax before. Be sure to specify if you want brass or stainless.

That's a deal I can't refuse, Kutter I don't anticipate needing six sets but I wouldn't mind having a couple. If I did this again, I'd probably try to copy the Herrett Shooting Star target grip. I would like to have the medallions but hardly a deal breaker on a deal like this. I'll take a look at the email.
Spent the afternoon refining the radius under the middle fingers right side. They're a bit thicker than factory at the web between forefinger and thumb (by intention). Also burnishing out that slackum finish with my eternal Simichrome rag. I also had to epoxy one hole for the roll pin thru the frame. I located simply by holding grip in position against the el in frame and drilling thru the roll pin. The right grip snapped on; the left pulled slightly away fom the el so I filled the blind hole with epoxy and bored it again. This afternoon they both snapped on and held without a tie rod so I'm pretty happy with the fit and the (almost) instant gratification.
