I can't get over how close I can get to these birds walking our dog. They are becoming as tame as the mule deer around here. These are smaller (younger) birds so that might explain part of it. The bigger hens and then the Toms are still pretty wary.

Out for our morning walk early (6:30-ish) because by 8:30 it's already too-darn warm right now, smoky too (from fires way-out southwest of here). Walking every day now in anticipation of the pending Fall.

The goal is 10k steps per day. 74 days and counting.

Lloyd, for what it’s worth,

I have found that during my desert quail trips which typically last 6 to 8 weeks, if I can bump my mileage up to something close to 20,000, 3xtimes a week, which is three hard days of hunting with the dogs, in about four weeks my body really begins to show a recontouring.
A much more healthy shape from top to bottom.

Something for you to work toward

If the amount of time you have available is limited, then, you can increase the pace.

Something around 11- 12 minutes per mile has the same impact.
And take care of your feet. Invest in a decent pair of walking trainers.

Out there doing it best I can.

CZ: My 8-weeks in Minnesota has the same effect. 15 to 18k days are common there and...getting up to speed for them seems to get harder every year. It requires more deliberation now, more effort. As far as my feet go, my Russells are still pretty wonderful on the trails and for warmer weather I've got a good pair of Merrills with fresh inserts.

Like the title of the book, my health is always better in November.

150 minutes per week of elevated heart rate.
The list of stuff that impacts is longer than your arms.

I swear, the healthiest 80-year-olds I’ve ever met were desert bird dog men.

Out there doing it best I can.
