The process to buy a gun in the Peoples Republic of Colorado finally completed yesterday. I made something of an event out of it and even picked up some target shells at the Scheels in C. Springs. The recent state tax on 4 flats of shells was almost $50 and they had to be removed from large cages by an employee with a key(!).

God help us here.

This gun is in very good original shape but it is very plain. Only simple border engraving, no ejectors, unfigured wood and a thin bakelite butt plate. Because it has a Churchill rib, all of the data that would usually be there is found on the tubes beside it. And, after a very close examination, I also found the tiniest JA stamp up near the forend hook.

Simple, and plain is really good in a grouse gun, Lloyd. Nice gun. Sure doesn’t appear to have had a lot of use.
Have you measured the chokes?

Headed down to the shop on Monday to see if it will fit in a small used case we have there. I will also confirm everything while I'm there (using the same tools I've worked with since 2006).

It's reportedly cyl and imp mod (near perfection in my mind).

Lloyd, you did good on this one. 28" barrels are scarcer on the 2" 12. I've bought from Battle before and it was a pleasure to deal with an honest gun dealer. The wood has some figure and looks fine for a field gun. James Albury "JA", as you know was a top barrel maker in Birmingham. He also made actions. I had a 2.5" 12 ga. Henry Atkin with "JA" initials on the barrels and presently have a C. Hellis 2" 12 with the initials on the barrel. I had a temporarily insane "got to have" notion on your gun, but escaped from the clutches of the notion when temporary sanity overcame me. Gil

Thanks Gil, I'm not surprised that you noticed it too.

I've measured a number of 2-inch guns at work over the years but as you mention, most were shorter tubed. Also, this is the first Skimin & Wood marked gun I've ever encountered.

They always had someone else's name on them before this one.

Also, I always thought the JA was for Joseph Asbury, did I have it wrong?

Looks like a nice honest gun Lloyd, enjoy it this fall.
