I thought you highjacked poor ed's thread about AI for another rant about cracked frame Flues?
"I've never seen a Smith...Lefever, NID or Ithaca Lefever, or even a Crescent (!) with a cracked frame" is factual, and many more Smiths and Crescents were manufactured than Flues, SAC or BAC.
What is the connection with loose Crescents? Or guns with top lever extensions and rotary bolts? (BTW I've never seen nor heard of an 'auto-opening' Smith. Should we start another thread?)

The point regarding proof testing is that Flues were proved for Nitro pressures, AS WERE BRITISH GUNS if marked 'NITRO PROOF' after 1896.
Pressure with 6 1/4 Drams “Tower Proof” Black Powder and 1 2/3 oz. shot was about 14,000 psi
Curtis & Harvey’s No. 4 T.S. Black Powder was about 13,000 psi
90 grains (42 grains = 3 Dram) “Schultze” about 13,300 psi
90 grains “E.C.” about 15,400 psi

Amazing what one can find with hours of searching wink even for those of us with simple minds smile

Preacher, why would you say that I hijacked Ed's Thread about A.I.??? Are you angry because the question that I posed to show the faults with A.I. just happened to also show that you and your incorrect assertions are a prime example of how A.I. can be simply a faster way to process "Garbage in--- Garbage out".

Please show us exactly where I even mentioned "guns with top lever extensions". Maybe Google "deceptive Preachers".

Why don't you enthrall us with your theories of why you haven't seen any Smith, NID, Lefever, or even Crescent guns with cracked frames. I never suggested that you weren't being factual about frame cracking in those brands. My point was that you conveniently neglected to even mention other brands that did, and you had even posted pics of them. Let's see whether you learned anything at all from the money you spent doing metallurgical tests on shotgun frames, and whether you understand how a frame might be either weaker or stronger depending on other factors such as the design, and places where metal was removed during machining. Then explain why the vast majority of Flues guns, including those that have been extensively fired with heavy field loads for decades, survived a fairly rigorous factory proof and never developed cracked frames. I notice you didn't go near the question of why a Flues is worth more than a Crescent in equal condition. A lot more shotguns become junk due to factors besides the rare frame cracking that mainly affects a few severely abused Flues guns. Do you have any verifiable proof whatsoever that the attrition rate for Ithaca Flues guns is excessive compared to Crescents, or other common vintage U.S. doubles?

That is the connection with loose Crescents. So sorry you were unable to connect some rather simple dots. I thought I made the point simple enough that even DimmyW could grasp it. But then you did acknowledge having a simple mind...

You now claim you've never heard of a Smith gun that popped open upon firing??? You are either being deceptive again, or suffering dementia, or a "convenient" loss of memory. The subject has been discussed right here several times in the past. I can easily recall the late Miller Fulk mentioning it multiple times himself. You remember Miller, the old guy who you despised because he accurately stated there was no Old Testament Biblical prohibition against slavery. Remember how you tried to twist his 100% factual statement into something he never said? And certainly an L.C. Smith aficionado such as yourself, who also frequently references Dewey Vicknair, has read what Dewey says about L.C. Smiths in his Blog "A Dispassionate Look at the Design of American Doubles". Under his critique of L.C. Smith guns, read No. 9

What I mean to say is, read No. 9 AGAIN. Then tell us you've never seen nor heard of it.

No need to start another Thread Preacher... it would be redundant. You will never admit that your hyperventilating hysterics concerning Ithaca Flues guns are grossly exaggerated, and have contributed to the erroneous results that A.I. currently provides... which is precisely what Ed asked us to test.

Knock yourself out, Ed.

Stan, you are right to be skeptical, but I have used AI a lot the past couple of years to determine herbicide mixes. I remember last summer I was going to spray a mix of gly and garlon on a field border, planning to enlarge the field in October. I knew the rate I used for each alone, but wasn't sure about a mix. Grok gave me what sounded like a reasonable answer and the mix worked well. I have gotten some wild replies from Gemini on similar questions, but I have not gotten a really bad reply from Grok on herbicides.

I think that in general you can get better answers to technical questions on forums than from AI, IF, and this is a big IF, you know the posters. When you don't know the posters, you have gotta decide who to believe because there is usually disagreement involved.

I listen to a weekly podcast by the GA Extension Service ag specialists. One of them, a weed scientist, said he had received several calls from farmers who had asked AI what rate to use for selected herbicides. All had used extremely high, and off label rates, following AI recommendations, and had damaged their crops.

The scientist said, Don't ask AI!".

Those farmers don’t seem too bright. How long had they been farming? I hope the taxpayers weren’t on the hook for the crop damage that they caused.

Maybe it’s time to take a hard look at the farm bill and start weeding out some of these inefficient/incompetent businesses.

“Some agricultural economists and analysts said the government aid is keeping inefficient farmers in business and motivating growers to keep planting beyond what the market needs.” from WSJ article 6-28-2026

back to the point of this thread:

"been using Google ai for shotgun facts look up...

it is absolutely amazing...

try it...

ask it your most obscure doublegun fact detail...

you will be amazed...

let us know if you stump it..."

I stumped it.

I asked it what year a Birmingham reproof date code of HD was from.

[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]

It lied to me, it went in circles, and it made things up.

Glad to see the discussion return to guns, but I’ve already answered your challenge. From my experience, all AI LLMs will do is regurgitate back, with utter confidence, the most widely repeated ‘fact,’ without knowing if it is accurate/true or not. It might even be right much of the time, but you’ll never know when it isn’t. And if you ‘stump it,’ it will make something up.

Drew,
I believe it was Elmer Keith that reported on what he called the most automatic shotgun in the world. I also believe it was an LC Smith, but, feel free to grok that.

Best,
Ted
