This is the gun that followed me home Sunday from the gun show. A 10 ga Parker lifter that someone has removed the top rib and added a 44-40 barrel. Who ever did the work knew what they were doing. They dovetailed in a new rifle extractor to the shotgun extractor. The firing pin mechanism will drop down when the peep sight is raised so that the right hammer will hit it. When the peep is in the down position it holds the firing pin up and out of the way so that the shotgun can be fired. Bores all look pretty good but need a good cleaning. The right hammer face is badly pitted, so much so that I don't know if it would fire the rifle. I'll weld it up and reface it.
I'm sure in my mind that these examples were done outside the Parker Bros. factory. I've seen similar attempts at making a drilling out of an Ithaca hammer double.
Not a lot of detail in the relevent photos, but it looks like the new breech block was silver soldered onto the top of the breech balls. The photo of the right side appears to show a relatively short length of joint.
I have tried some sketchy things with guns in my time, but even with the mild chambering, I would have some trepidition with trusting who knows who that did the work who knows when. I bet there were absolutely no calcs performed except "I think that'll work".
