This conversation triggered some memories from a past life...
Flooding and molds have troubled the world since the beginning of time. Molds have two defensive mechanisms to keep otherwise destructive entities away from their newly adopted homes, many produce bio-aerosols and then undergo sporification (both can contain a micotoxin). That "moldy" smell is a warning to anything air-breathing to stay the hell away.
These micotoxins can produce very abarrent behavior in the animals and people that are subjected to them (suspected as a contributor to the events leading up to the Salem Witch Trials) and it can kill after a fatal exposure threshold is met (black slime mold is associated with SIDS [sudden infant death syndrome] in poor innner-city children).
