Thats a beautiful Stock!

So I have a pic of the lumps, as you call them, and I think I understand what you mean by that line now. I see a split line on both. So is that correct to say that this is a Chopper Lump Barrels version.

I just weighed her, and she is 7.4lbs. That is the heaviest SXS I have ever encountered.

Thanks, doublegunshop gang. I am fairly new and have been noodling in the SXS world this past year. I picked up several SXS models at this level that seem nice and in decent shape.
I went to the Southern Side by Side Championship & Exhibition in the Spring since I am in Charlotte, only 2 hours away. I went to learn about and see the event, not to shoot. It was amazing, so many beautiful side-by-sides.
I probably will not make any of the Fall SXS events; it is a bit farther, and it is the same week as the NC Dixie State ATA Trap tournament. I shoot this event.

Many, many years ago Cortland line company imported these guns and called them parker hale. I use to buy them form them. NIce little guns. Not sure why they quit. I think one of my friends has a 20 and a 28 ga for sale. Not sure if he still has them. We use to hunt together. He gave up hunting. I sold a lot of them and no issues. They were looking semi-recently for an importer in the US for their guns. Do not think it will happen.


PS: several years ago I contacted them direct and was interested in 28 ga guns. They said only able to make 12s. Probably different now.

Yes, those are chopper lump barrels.

The 73/74 PH catalogue lists guns by Merkel, Miroku and Victor Sarasqueta, but not Ugartechea.

The 83 and 88 Catalogues list guns by “one of Spain’s most respected gunmakers” ( I am certain that this is a reference to Ugartechea)and the equivalent model to yours , but with a bit less engraving, was the model 602 ( the model 603 being similar but with a Churchill rather than a concave rib).

To Ted's comment regarding 26" barrels.

Guns are subject to trends/fads just like all other American consumer goods. I lay much of the blame for the popularity of single triggers, beavertail forends and short barrels to Jack O'Connor's writing. Jack was very respected and had a lot of influence over the opinions of the gun buying public. This was well deserved in the field of rifles and he did much to help the riflemen of America. Lighter rifles, more accurate barrels and bullets etc.

Jack was a shotgunning amateur. By his own admission he never broke a 25 at 16 yard trap and I am not sure he ever broke a 25 at skeet. His upland hunting experience was long but thin. Yet he held forth on shotguns like he had somehow earned credibility in the field. He tried to make his shotguns like his rifles. ( I strongly suspect he was an aimer and poky shot but don't know of course.) It was a mistake. The public bought it hook line and sinker. Now the market is flooded with a lot of 1940 to 1990 guns of very undesirable specifications.

Not all his fault of course but his influence was definitely a significant factor in the way shotguns of that era were built.

It wasn’t just Jack. But, his crown was the biggest.


Jack was waxing poetic about the Winchester model 70, in .270 for North American game for much of my life. Years later, we found out he never really strayed from his familiar 30-06 for his own shooting.

My Dad was a serious rifleman, but, in spite of that he wasn’t as gifted with a shotgun. Ever. I imagine there are guys who do both disciplines well, they just weren’t in my orbit.
