In a recent simulation maneuver, Ukrainian drone operators wiped out a complete US armored Brigade in 30 minutes: Ships in close in waters - heck within 500 miles of the shore are next - until civilian tankers loaded with 10,000 of the critters sail within a few miles of an aircraft carrier.

The combat world has changed and divvying out shotguns is not the answer.

The drones aren’t being developed in a vacuum, Gene:

https://defensefeeds.com/military-tech/navy/laser-weapon-systems/helios-laser/

The Navy has been conducting some rather stunning drone takedowns, and the Army is developing a similar weapon system. The cost of eliminating the drones is the problem, and the lasers do it for pennies a shot.

We are still kings at finding and reporting launch locations in real time. Air superiority is never going to be far from the most important objective, either.

Ted

Thanks Ted - but no confidence that we can detect a prop powered drone launch. Here is the Marine solution which again concentrates on shotguns and grenade launcher flechettes for close in last-minute protection of troops:

I'm surprised Stanton is not hiring out as a military contractor to Ft. Stewart or Ft. Gordon to teach this stuff - lot of money in this.

But when you see this coming at you (this from the 4th of July fireworks on the mall in DC), what to do? Are flesh seeking bullets next? Can my 2 1/2" 12 gauge #8 shot be programmed to hone in on clay?

Aegis handles Drones just fine, Gene:

The lasers are being integrated into the Aegis system. Remember, you don’t have to destroy the drone, dazzling it works just fine. There was equipment onboard the SR-71 that was known to leave foreign missiles unable to target and track the aircraft, with later allegations leveled that it could actually override and take flight control of certain missile systems-those missles flew up the tailpipes of lurking enemy interceptors on more than one occasion, with no acknowledgement of exactly how it happened.

The times are changing, but, amazing as those July 4th drones appear to be, they can’t get near a carrier battle group just yet.

Ted

Lordy, I hope not. When shotguns get developed to the point that they can't miss I will have totally lost interest. 100 percent accuracy is an admirable goal for the military, but not for sporting regimens.

May God bless America and those who defend her.
