The sun is a fraction above the horizon, my daughter had a softball tourney all day. My son was a bear all day missing opening day squirrel. We’ve sat the rail bed for the last 45 mins. No errant doves or September Canadas have passed the sky above me, but I just heard the first squirrel hit the ground after a single .22 report.

West Central Texas and our ongoing drought combined with 103*F+ temps have thankfully not hurt our nearly week old season. Birds have found something to eat that is keeping them around. Waterhole shooting has been my staple thus far. With temps like this it is the only safe way to give my dog an outing. The scarce water sources that remain available provide red hot action every evening. With multiple stock wells on the ranch I am able to rotate my shoots and not pressure any one spot.
Texas P&W reports that dove numbers are up 30+% over last years record numbers. Hard to figure but I am going to take advantage of every opportunity. Limits have been coming easy and my shooting is holding up to a nice standard. Indeed fortunate to be still doing this.
Good luck to all.

I have been invited to a dove shoot today and I am going out about 3:00 this afternoon, which will be my first time doing any shooting since my heart surgery and 8 months of recovery methods. I am going to shoot WinchesterAA 12 ga. 26 gr "Feather" loads in my 1873 Alfred Lancaster 12 gauge hammergun with its original pristine condition damascus barrels (.027" min wall) that were proofed in London Proof House in 1999 for 2 3/4" 850 BAR. I am also taking some Armusa "Vintage" 12 gauge 28 gr (1180fps) loads along as well if I decide I am OK to shoot them.

By the Grace of God, I am a fortunate survivor.

Kind Regards;
Stephen Howell

Congratulations, Stephen. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did my first dove shoot and quail hunt after recovering from my accident at Clarks Hill Lake 6 years ago.

Good luck Stephen, hope you get your limit. How about some pictures if you get a chance.

Mike;

I emailed you 2 photos of the Alfred Lancaster hammergun. Please post them here. The gun is no. 1 of a pair of 12 bores originally built(1873) with Rhino horn butt stock and fore-end, but could not be sent from Scotland due to world wildlife laws. The original owner had a another pair built(1874) by Alfred Lancaster in 20 bore and that pair currently resides in the Royal Gunroom at Sandringham with their Rhino horn stocks in place.

Kindly;
Stephen Howell

A guy could certainly do worse, no?
