Stanton, driving old 301 south, by any chance do you remember Ludowici, Georgia? I think it was Lester Maddox who finally busted that speed trap. Unfortunately it just transferred south to Baldwin, then to Waldo, Florida. The south could be a pretty difficult place back then. (Waldo fired its 6 man police force about 5 years ago since its sole function was to fund itself via tickets).

Just got to the north country tonight (after a lovely 2-day drive across the "fruited plains").

I guess I won't be doing any shopping at Rainy River this year. I used to really like the big liquor store over there.

Darn shame.

I'm sure Canvasback is right, Americans can be serious blockheads (no doubt!) but this trouble with our northern neighbor is disheartening for me. I'm sure there's alot about it I don't know (I actually work at not knowing too-much these days) but... I hate how this has become so-ugly so-fast. Maybe it was inevitable with the way our respective governments have evolved but it makes me rather sad to think about it all.

I sure hope it doesn't get any worse.

Not new. See the link above from 2020. Here is an excerpt:

Son talked repeatedly to the Canadian immigration service before departing and was told that entry was entirely up to the individual immigration office/officer he would deal with. He absolutely had to be in Alaska by mid-June. The only way to get his gear there was to transit BC and Yukon....no other way to go without the maritime highway. So to be on the safe side, he left the shotgun at home...not wanting to provoke. They got provoked anyway. (edit: they tore the truck apart then made him drive 40 miles back to the border to retrieve his passport). He was the only person trying to cross the border at that time so maybe they were just bored.

Anyway, everybody he saw on the route up-country was carrying so it wasn't necessarily an anti-gun thing .... just a problem with the immigration service. He made it but the race through Yukon with a fully loaded truck was sort of a cannon-ball run.

The Canadian government has just been responding to ours, and there is no sign that anything is getting any better. Lake America indeed.

Plenty of contentious issues. See above. Canada is not innocent. But not the least of these issues is "let the USA handle our defense." "We don't need an army or navy but can skewer them whenever we want." I'm thinking of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division which took Juno Beach on D-Day. The mentality of Canada at that time was totally different.

And here is a comment totally off topic - "Mentality." Military capability can be equated to logistics, manufacturing capacity, engineering, power generation, conscription, organization, technology development, etc. But most of all it has to do with a mentality - can you envisage having to go to war? Western Europe after the fall of the Wall cannot. Neither can Canada. They all absconded and deferred to us (with sneering condescension - while sheltering under a nuclear umbrella funded by US taxpayers).

Can this continue? If Putin decides to claim Baffin Island, what will Canada do? Ukraine learned the hard way. Kuwait as well. Taiwan may be in the cross hairs. But Canada is secure in its delusion and the USA is now the bad guy.

Personally I like "Lake Ohio" But you understand that is a bargaining tactic right out of Queen's NYC? I once had to attend a course in "bargaining." - not like I hadn't haggled for carpets and guns - and one of the principles, whether bargaining on the price of socks or real estate is to say - "We aren't on the same planet". .and make some outrageous counter offer - but never ever get mad and walk away. (This is sort of like the old: "So you don't want to sleep with me? Is that for just tonight?")

Probably a good time to travel within the US for a while.

One of his employees was drinking a beer, but he was not. He was harassed by the SP and told to submit to a breath-alyzer test. He was angry and refused, after repeatedly telling the officer he was not drinking, whereupon he was taken to a facility where he took the breath-alyzer test and blew a 0.00. Trooper was surprised and embarrassed and took my friend's licenses. He was told he has to do 20 hours of community service to get them back. He has retained a lawyer. I hope he sues, and wins.

From Microsoft bing ai search…

“In South Carolina, an open container of alcohol is defined as any container that has been opened, had its seal broken, or a portion of its contents removed, and which contains any amount of alcoholic beverage. This includes not only bottles or cans of alcohol that have been opened, but also cups, flasks, or any other type of container that holds alcohol and is not fully sealed or closed. It is important to note that having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, even if the driver is not actively drinking from it, is a violation of South Carolina’s open container laws.

Additionally, it is illegal for passengers in a vehicle to possess open containers of alcohol, not just the driver. This means that all passengers in a vehicle are prohibited from having open containers of alcohol in their possession while the vehicle is in operation.”

Thanks, Lonny. That explains it. GA probably has a very similar law.

Oh yes, I remember Ludowici , and it's well deserved reputation, very well.

May God bless America and those who defend her.

Uh huh. Theses countries are responding to our government, as well.

Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Peru.

Not a single one of them was a benefactor of the Marshal Plan, either.

Donald Trump pokes them in the ribs with a temporary name change to Lake Ontario. If Vlad decides he wants Baffin Island, what the hell is Canada going to do about it? Taiwan is better prepared than Canada is.

Best,
Ted

Hey, Lonny, the Canadian military needs you. And, that is both hilarious and sad, at the same time.

Very much not new. I was on a family vacation when I was much younger and went Canada, maybe late 1970's or early 1980's and my father had a shotgun in the trunk because we were camping. Canadian border patrol required him to surrender it, we had planned to re-enter the US at another location, but had to go back to the original location to retrieve the shotgun.

Perhaps present circumstances have aggravated things or perhaps the Canadians are just tired of obnoxious Americans. We, as a country, are not necessarily viewed positively when we go to other countries. It was like that well before Trump and will be like that long after Trump is gone. The MSM of other countries are as bad or worse than the US MSM.

On edit: I'm not sure how I would have reacted, some of the questions CBP is entitled to know and others like how many guns and what kind I have at home is none of their damn business. I also recognize that CBP may be required to ask some of those questions because of orders from above.
