Funny, but those elbozos up’ers are a humorless lot and tend to get triggered quite easily.

And Ted said my Canadian passport was useless.

I'm sure Canvasback is right, Americans can be serious blockheads (no doubt!) but this trouble with our northern neighbor is disheartening for me. I'm sure there's alot about it I don't know (I actually work at not knowing too-much these days) but... I hate how this has become so-ugly so-fast. Maybe it was inevitable with the way our respective governments have evolved but it makes me rather sad to think about it all.

I sure hope it doesn't get any worse.

Back when I worked for a living, I can recall an interview with a US customs agent who was curious (and not in a good way) about the footwear samples I had with me. These are typically half pairs in women's size 6 and men's size 9. I had maybe 24 half pairs in what was obviously a purpose made sample case for shoes. My business cards indicated clearly I was in the wholesale footwear trade. He accused me of planning to bring the matching half pairs down with me on my next trip so I could match them up and get away without paying whatever the appropriate duty rate was at the time. Had I actually been planning to do that, I might have scammed my way to a windfall of $120. Could have retired then and there! laugh

I think Lloyd and Stan have it right. Put a uniform on someone and it goes to some of their heads. On both sides of the border. That said, I have little sympathy for those who assume because it's legal in one country, it's legal in another. When I travel to the US I make of point of trying to be aware of the differences in the laws.

The other side of the coin is traveling to Nebraska to hunt with a car load of vintage doubles with me and having a very enthusiastic US agent ask me why I was going to Nebraska when there was great hunting right there in Michigan. And peppered me with questions about vintage shotguns.

I arrive at border crossing with my paperwork perfectly in order often on a clip board (hunting licenses, dog rabies info etc), I immediately roll all the windows down, winter or summer, and if it's night time, turn on the interior light. I declare everything, every time. I find when I behave like that, the agents are polite, often friendly and move me through. They are in the business of making snap judgements based on physical appearances and behaviors. I make it easy for them to make the right decision. No attitude, just organized and respectful.

The Canadian government has just been responding to ours, and there is no sign that anything is getting any better. Lake America indeed.

Our Pro-2nd Amendment President Donald Trump doesn't see it that way. He wouldn't have imposed Tariffs on Canadian products if they were engaging in Free and Fair Trade with us. Canada got so used to taking advantage of us that they are incensed by Trump attempting to level the playing field. Trump just got another win by threatening to ban imports of Bombardier Jets from Canada unless they stopped delaying certification of Gulfstream Jets from the U.S. Our Trump haters with TDS see things like this as a reason to blame Trump for current trade tensions. Of course, they are used to just rolling over when their Democrat politicians pass more and more anti-gun laws, so they expect Trump to act like a whipped puppy as well.

And we won't see LGF complaining about all of the name changing of Military bases, Sports Teams, and products like Aunt Jemima syrup that was done by the Lunatic Left he is aligned with.

My long term experience is that border agents are far bigger dicks to the returning citizens than visitors entering the country.

The mentality of Canada at that time was totally different.

And here is a comment totally off topic - "Mentality." Military capability can be equated to logistics, manufacturing capacity, engineering, power generation, conscription, organization, technology development, etc. But most of all it has to do with a mentality - can you envisage having to go to war? Western Europe after the fall of the Wall cannot. Neither can Canada. They all absconded and deferred to us (with sneering condescension - while sheltering under a nuclear umbrella funded by US taxpayers).

Can this continue? If Putin decides to claim Baffin Island, what will Canada do? Ukraine learned the hard way. Kuwait as well. Taiwan may be in the cross hairs. But Canada is secure in its delusion and the USA is now the bad guy.

Personally I like "Lake Ohio" But you understand that is a bargaining tactic right out of Queen's NYC? I once had to attend a course in "bargaining." - not like I hadn't haggled for carpets and guns - and one of the principles, whether bargaining on the price of socks or real estate is to say - "We aren't on the same planet". .and make some outrageous counter offer - but never ever get mad and walk away. (This is sort of like the old: "So you don't want to sleep with me? Is that for just tonight?")

Gene, I feel like I'm one of the few Canadians who understands this......that we have left our defense to the Americans which enabled us to spend our tax dollars in other, much more useless ways. I like that Trump is calling the country (and Europe) to task on this subject. I find the attitude of many Canadians, particularly in the East, that they are somehow superior to Americans and look down on them, is downright disgusting. This sense of superiority is not a new thing.....it's not a Trump thing. It goes back at least to the 1960s and has been pushed by the arts, media, university and civil service crowd. You know, the ones who don't need to make a payroll or worry about losing their jobs.

And as someone who spent a lot of my career in sale and marketing, Trump's behavior is very familiar to me. In a way that it just is not for so many others on both sides of the border.

I think Carney purposely screwed the deal in order to gain electoral popularity up here, especially in Quebec, Ontario and BC.

But this passing off of our defense to the US was done with the full and complicit knowledge of the American government. The American government, the Trump government, signed the trade deals that had been in place. Those deals were hailed as "great for America" by Americans when they were signed. What you seem to forget or excuse completely is the complicitness of America in the stupid situation we all now find ourselves in.

Does everyone remember all the times Dr. Wanker made similar comments concerning anti-gun Democrat Bill Clinton, who avoided the Draft by getting several Student deferments during the Vietnam War. And then he pulled strings to join the ROTC after Nixon started the Draft Lottery. But then when Bill got a very high draft number, he reneged on his ROTC commitment.

Dr. Wanker also didn't comment about the anti-gunner Barack Hussein Obama sending military personnel into harms way, even though Obama never served. Not even when Obama ordered the drone attack killing of a U.S. citizen without any due process whatsoever.

And Dr. Wanker also forgot to comment about the anti-gunner Joe Biden getting 5 student draft deferments, and then a 1-Y exemption at a draft physical after he could not get any more deferments upon graduating law school. Actually, believe it or not, Dr. Wanker has no problem with anti-gun Democrat draft dodgers.

But none of that is nearly as funny as trying to explain why these closet Democrat guys (and gals) who whine, cry, and complain about Politics in this forum think it's perfectly OK when they do it again and again and again...

International trade is not and never has been a zero-sum game. To consider it such and act on that is beyond stupid. It has not been a mystery for several centuries.

All of the passports and birth certificates were in order and the immigration interaction on the Canadian side began normally. After requiring the windows to be rolled down and sunglasses removed the agent asked the driver, “Do you have any guns in the vehicle?” The driver has lived his entire life in the area and had made this same trip countless times. He’d never been asked this before and was a bit surprised. He answered truthfully, “No.” From there the line of questioning became more disconcerting.
“Do you have any guns at home?”
“It is illegal to bring guns into Canada.”
“What kind of guns do you have at home?”
“When was the last time you shot them?”
“When was the last time you had guns in your car?”
“If you have a gun in the car we can hold it for you until you leave.”
“If we inspect your vehicle and find a gun you WILL be arrested.”

Interspersed through this interaction, the agent prefaced some queries with, “This is not a trick question …”

The visit occurred in the time window after the breakdown of US-Canada trade talks and before Lake America and has prompted several more conversations as to, “What was that all about?” Nothing that we can think of would cause anyone to think that we were anything other than three generations of a “plain vanilla” family. None of the boys even had a camo cap on.

Where should the driver/where would you have “drawn the line”, declined to answer, and turned around and come back to the US (if that would have even been permitted without an inspection)?

I think you handled this well. You showed your children how to face an unexpected problem with a government authoritarian. No loud noises, polite behavior, professional. People in law enforcement usually have no sense of humor while working. They really can’t when you consider the number and types of people they have to deal with everyday. Hopefully your children were left with a positive memory of a day with their family and not one of dad in handcuffs. As to why the border guards performed as they did, well who knows? Because all policemen are cast from the same ultra conservative mold? Very doubtful. I personally have stopped going to Canada. That is not a protest. I just don’t want the hassle. I can fish and hunt in the US and there are no border guards. If Canadians feel the same way about the US that’s fine. There will be less traffic in south Florida this winter.

This is partly true, and some countries have been able to slowly bleed their trading partners to death when the advantages are too extreme. So it is in no way stupid for Trump to act on our behalf to improve a massive foreign trade deficit. And the huge commitments by foreign companies to build plants and create jobs here in the U.S. prove it is already helping to keep a fair balance. This will also make us less dependent upon our adversaries and help national security. Under the old and stupid Trade deals, some consumers got cheaper goods, but at the expense of millions of U.S. manufacturing workers who lost jobs or had to settle for lower wages. Fewer taxpayers paying less in income taxes while Federal and State spending increased led to huge and unsustainable deficits. Trump was happy to renegotiate NAFTA during his first term, and signed the new agreement. But when he noticed that Canada and other countries were still doing end-runs to keep their unfair advantage, he wasn't dumb enough to say, "Well, I signed that and it didn't go far enough to protect our interests... so I'll just live with it." He will continue to tweak things rather than taking daily naps and falling down. Trump is acting in the interests of this country, and that will never make those with TDS happy.

As the Mid-terms approach, we can expect all of our Closet Democrats to make a huge deal about 3.2% food inflation and $3.79 gas when they were totally silent about the Biden era massive increase to the M2 Money Supply that spiked inflation and eroded the value of every dollar by 20-25%. It made inflation adjusted gas and diesel prices much higher than they are now too.

I am still wondering why Dr. Wanker and other Closet Democrats insist on moving a discussion about harassment of gun owners at the Canadian Border into the very Off-Topic Politics they always whine about???

At least we all know they have the integrity to not attempt to get anyone banned or censored for mentioning their hypocrisy!

Well actually, they don't. On another forum I visit, they make it easy for dummies to spot sarcasm by putting the words in Purple.
