I never felt shooting damascus to be roulette, but I shoot percussion rifles from the 1830's.

Good walls, bores and proper loads go a long way toward maintaining safety. In proof is certainly my preference, but if the walls are thick enough, the bores are good and the price is right, I might be a player. Location is everything when is comes to wall thickness.
