The Garibaldi jewelry motif originated as a form of "sentimental and political jewelry" during the heights of Garibaldimania in the 1860s and 1870s. The tightly interlocking, unbreakable chains carried powerful political symbolism.

Garibaldi mania was all over Europe in the 1860's-70's. Even women's fashion- red military cut blouses - were influenced by him: (Interesting fact is that Garibaldi was an Ardant mason and he used a lot of Masonic emblems on his personal items; the Catholic Church at this time automatically excommunicated Masons - Yet he installed Victor Emmanuel of Turino (then King of Piedmont-Sardinia) as the first King of Italy and as a catholic monarch in 1860.

Any Damascus would likely be a double chain design of some sort or another.
