So, the elephant in the room is this question . . . . why do you keep using a shipping service that is so bad to deal with? There are other options.

All of the shippers have their good, not so good, and outright despicable moments.

The winners on collecting the insurance that USPS sells are about like men who have walked on the moon-few, and much effort to accomplish the task.

Out of the blue, that gun arrived here this morning (while I was out hunting). Tracking never updated until it was finally sitting on our porch. The postmaster in Arizona seems to have resolved it for my gunsmith before I could do anything else.

Frustrating experience but...at least resolved satisfactorily this time. God....if I never ship another gun it'll be too soon.

To answer Stanton's question....cost, combined with ease of service. Fedex is not gun friendly here in Colorado and IIRC there were other challenges at the gunshop with pickup and dropoff (when I worked there).

The USPS largely became the only game in town.

I know, Ted. But, having watched Comp-N-Choke ship tens of thousands of packages, including guns almost daily, I bow to their decision that UPS is the better of the lot. Not perfect, but the best bet going.

Tracking works with them, and there's no packages sitting in a facility for days, or weeks, ignored.

It's going to boil down to each person's experience with the "big three", but when you can take advantage of a company's experience that is thousands of times more than your own, why not pay attention?

Cost. That's an answer, but not a satisfactory one. Ease of service. How easy was the last few days?

Comp-N-Choke wouldn't be using a higher cost method of shipping if there was an equally dependable but lower cost one. And, I've never promoted FedEx for guns, only for documents.

When you're wringing your hands about whether a gun is lost or not a few dollars seems like a poor point to me. And, I'm not even saying that UPS is more expensive than UPS. But, next time I'm at Comp-N-Choke I'll ask about cost.

As a non-FFL I have not been able to ship through anyone except USPS for over a year now. Even that has been a crapshoot with USPS employees not knowing their own policies, laws and my rights. Other option is to go to a local FFL and pay additional fees and, the gun has to be returned to them as well, not directly to me. UPS and FedEx can go to hell.

FedEx is currently screwing up delivery of a Perazzi for me.

They told me all day on Friday it'd be here...it was still in Minnesota...

It's in Eau Claire now...I should get it Monday.

Far be it from me to interject a different (not opposing) view,
When did a persons expectations expand to expect immediate satisfaction from an organization that ships millions upon millions of packages every day?

Electronic tracking hasn’t even been around that long.

Now it seems we’ve convinced ourselves that we need to grab pitchforks and torches and run down to the local post office and start skewering people over a package that the tracking isn’t updated.

Myself I feel that’s unreasonable expectation.

I remember the days not long ago a package that was ordered mail order would take six weeks to two months to get to you. And we accepted that happily.

Now we want it now, or we go apoplectic.

Hiring practices at the US postal service give extraordinary preference to the veterans we so revere.

The imaginary lazy [censored - Hard Stop on oblique posting!] thieving slacker is a former military hero.

That, my doublegun friends, is what they call cognitive dissonance.


Stan’s answer is the simplest, most straightforward one. Identify the level of service you require, and be willing to pay for it.

Use next day air. Never had a problem with it. Downside is ,it's expensive. But at least my guns were with the shipper only 24 hours.
