I can write this from experience. Take SKB's advice and if you ship by USPS use Registered Mail. It will take longer for the package to arrive but it will GET there.

I haven’t lately, but, did use the Post Office “Next Day” guaranteed service on a few guns. The last time, they missed the delivery by 12 hours, and the entire price was refunded. It was eye watering expensive, the tracking was good, in that I knew it wasn’t going to get there on time, but, knew where it was, and it got there in a day and a half, not bad.

I’m told there is no money back guarantee at this time, but, haven’t needed to ship a gun that was worth anything in a few years.

I ordered a couple LED bulbs off the ‘bay, not noticing the shipper was in China. The things got here in four days. The postman left them on the front porch, in the rain, not putting the package under the eve of the house. Orchestrated brilliance right up to the point of delivery, with the last step entrusted to a moron.

That is the roulette wheel you face when you ship something, anything, anywhere.

I actually don’t get too panicky anymore when they miss the delivery day by a day or two. Not worth it.

Best,
Ted

I have used Apple Air Tags on high value packages for years.
Instead of asking where a package is you can show the shipper where it is.

Now it seems we’ve convinced ourselves that we need to grab pitchforks and torches and run down to the local post office and start skewering people over a package that the tracking isn’t updated.

Myself I feel that’s unreasonable expectation.

I remember the days not long ago a package that was ordered mail order would take six weeks to two months to get to you. And we accepted that happily.

Now we want it now, or we go apoplectic.

Hiring practices at the US postal service give extraordinary preference to the veterans we so revere.

The imaginary lazy [censored - Hard Stop on oblique posting!] thieving slacker is a former military hero.

That, my doublegun friends, is what they call cognitive dissonance.

Stan’s answer is the simplest, most straightforward one. Identify the level of service you require, and be willing to pay for it.

The businesses set the expectation, not us. It's up to them to perform to the level they claim they do, not make excuses for not meeting the expectations they set.

...but in my case, it's not the delivery time that's the problem. It's being lied to. I set my schedule for Friday with the expectation that I'd be picking up the gun. They told me, several times all day, that the gun would be delivered Friday when I could see it sitting two hours away...by noon it was obvious it wasn't going to make it...but they still lied about it.

I passed up an opportunity to go fishing with a friend so I could do so.

We were going to go Monday - tomorrow...now I have to cancel that, again.

Had they simply been truthful from the beginning, it would have been fine. Over promise and under deliver is no a way to run a business.

...and tracking by barcode has been around for a pretty long time. We were using it in the late 1990s to track paper and customer shipments.

I forgot to say UPS next day air. My average cost for 1 gun from east of the Mississippi was approximately $225 but that was about a year ago.

Five years ago that was about the price for the USPS guaranteed overnight service. But, when they dropped the ball, they gave you your money back.

In my entire life, I cannot recall a time when it was accepted that a package by mail "would take six weeks to two months to get to you."

If sending a package really took that long in the not so distant past, Grandma would have had to send your Christmas gift before Halloween to be confident it would arrive on time.

It seems the Gray Man is old enough to remember shipping packages via the Pony Express or Stagecoach.

Quite a few people are able to share stories of poor service, lost or damaged goods, and inability to resolve losses through insurance claims. At the same time, the cost of shipping has increased a great deal. But the Gray Man thinks we're all just imagining an issue where none exists.

Somehow, I'm just not able to accept that the "lazy [censored - Hard Stop on oblique posting!] thieving slacker" responsible for poor service and theft is a former military hero. Much more likely a DEI or Affirmative Action hire, but our Liberals will never admit it.

And I also wonder why the word ([censored - Hard Stop on oblique posting!]) has been censored and subject to a "Hard Stop on Oblique Posting"??? You can hit the QUOTE box in this Post to see the word, which is in no way offensive except to people who live by it. I wonder whose feeling got hurt now?

Your post is a perfect example of what I was trying to convey. What makes you think that the person at the counter was purposefully trying to mislead you about the arrival time of your firearm?

There is a difference between lying, and being wrong or inaccurate.

It is Entirely possible that the person at the counter (or whomever you spoke to) has no reason to believe (based on their daily experience with the contractors), and what the screens they look at tell them, (which is the only information they have to share), that your firearm wasn’t going to be there on Friday.

Running around calling everybody who is wrong about something a liar just makes the world a worse place.

Out there doing it best I can.

Tracking works with them, and there's no packages sitting in a facility for days, or weeks, ignored.

It's going to boil down to each person's experience with the "big three", but when you can take advantage of a company's experience that is thousands of times more than your own, why not pay attention?

There is(was?, I moved away) a large UPS warehouse in SLC that sold off all of the undeliverable, lost and insurance paid items in their system. Tens of thousands of items for sale and more every day. I bought many firearms accessories.

ALL of them damage or lose packages.

I only use USPS as the UPS and FedEx depots are too far away and I don't ship enough guns for daily pick up.

I have had the long delivery problem with one rifle in USPS limbo for 30 days. ATF and Postal Inspectors involved. Showed up a week later with tracking never updating.

The people and packages that Comp-N-Choke ships are worth something to whoever is getting the bid on that shipping.

The rest of us, not so much.

Ted
