As a laser engraver owner, I'd do a fair amount of testing on other items before I ran the final on a set of gun barrels.
You don't want to go too deep.
I've not blued barrels, and probably won't, but it's easy to over do it if you're not careful.
If you're using someone who has done a lit of this, there's probably nothing to worry about.
I am not the owner of the laser. The idea is taking the barrel to a shop where they engrave. I have a damaged barrel that I will take first to test.
How deep is not too deep?? Normally lettering on a barrel is done on the brech side, where barrel is thick, so i suppose there is no danger going too deep. Maybe 0,8mm max???
