For the past 15 woodcock and quail seasons (dove, too) I have posted photos of my guns, birds and dogs including the late Abby who died this past June at 15.5 after 15 years in the field. The only person who hunted over her as much as me was Floyd. A month ago he gave me the watercolor below that he did from a photo taken by me 10 years ago of 5 years old Abby pointing a doodle. It was an unexpected treasure of a gift. Floyd got the shot and the doodle. He was shooting his Ithaca SKB 100 20 gauge. I took the photo on my Blackberry. While more noted for his realistic bird carvings, he knows his way around a paint brush, too. One of the most artistically gifted individuals I have ever met. I'm blessed to have hunted both with Floyd and with Abby. She was an awesome bird dog, and Floyd an awesome shot with that SKB.
You're a blessed man, Gil, for having had both he and she so close to you, for so long.

Gil, that's a lovely painting and a great memory to have on the wall. Floyd IS gifted. This is the first I'm hearing about Abbey but not unexpected. My condolences.

You're a blessed man, Gil, for having had both he and she so close to you, for so long. Stan, true on all counts. Here's one of those days with you. Abby is closest to you. Other than the birds that day on December 21, 2019, it was memorable when Willa emerged from a thicket with a wild piglet crosswise in her jaws like an oversized, squealing pulled-pork sandwich. I was once walking beside Floyd as Abby and Snap (IIRC) were working up ahead of us. We were walking an old fire lane. One dog bumped a doodle which took flight immediately. Floyd made the fastest move with that short barreled Ithaca SKB I had ever witnessed, and shot. I looked around at him and asked if he hit it. He said "No." In just a moment the dog came to him with the bird in its mouth. He just looked at me and grinned.
He knew he had centered that bird the whole time, but it all happened so fast that it passed me by like a Hayabusa passing a bicycle.
