Probably nine out of ten items that show up in my mailbox are unsolicited, and not time sensitive in any case. For ten pieces of mail, we employ an army that shows up 6 days a week at every, single, address across the United States and its protectorates, military installations, and embassies world wide. We live in a world of instant electronic communication, and maintain a mail service that was state of the art, with regards to consumer service, in 1950, or, whenever they went to once a day delivery, instead of morning and afternoon. We were assured, at the time, that the end of twice a day mail delivery was a signpost pointing the route to the apocalypse.
Didn’t work out quite that way, but, there you go.
It is probably long past time to look forward with regards to the postal service, and determine what constitutes a piece of mail valuable and important enough to be in a mail bag, and to trim the service back to what is necessary for it to economically exist.
To begin that process, you have to be able to admit that what we have is too costly and inefficient to continue, as is.
“Same old, same old” is no way to run any government provided service.
