Shotgun shell transplants.
One oz. out, for one oz. in.
Polywad Vintagers the recipient, with Kents'TM the donor.
Just need a handful and a friend can do it...what do I need to know.

Lowell, I don't know much about the two different shells, what I do know is that with some of the nontox the primers and wads would be different. If used in an older gun you could build up a lot more psi than recommended for your gun.
If you are not going to be shooting a lot,I would suggest you just buy what you need.
I'm guessing you are going to use it for waterfowl.
On steel loads there are sometimes as many as 4 different wad types and sometimes a buffer is added.
Be careful.

You are trying to substitute TM for lead in an already loaded shell, if I understand. As TM has not been available for hand loads, methods and load data may not be available.

I gather you are seeking a low pressure load, such as the Polywad Vintagers, and intend for the pressure to remain low after the substitution.

Ecotungsten's NiceShot is supposed to substitute for lead using lead load recipes per their site. It is a little harder than lead, but much softer than steel or the other tungsten alloy shot. You might want to ask both Polywad and Ecotungsten if the substitution is OK. http://ecotungsten.com/shots.html .

Interesting that TM is a little softer than lead per Ecotungsten's link above. The substitution you originally proposed is probably OK.

Two words, Thorny.

Mossberg 500. Costs less than a good look-see by the double gun doctor, and, potentially a lot less than the damage you will do.

My crystal ball has spoken, and everyone will have one in the globally toasty future, that is shaping up as lead free alarmingly fast.

Your state is at the forefront. The Beesley and whatever else you care about will get waxed, and, that is about it. The percent of the earth's crust that is tungsten, or bismuth, is tiny. Steel will rule, like it or not.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Best,
Ted

Thorny,
For your exact scenario, you should be good to go. Just don't try cramming it all in if it does not seem to fit...its gunna take up a bit more space for the same weight.

Make sure your re-crimp is exactly the same depth as original and go whack some fowl.

Best,
Mark

I hear they are considering letting people shoot lead shot at waterfowl out of Vintage shotguns (pre 1898)....and also getting the 8 gauge made legal again for waterfowl.

Lowell,

I have done something similar in the past. I used Winchester Featherlites as the recipient. Removing the #7.5 shot and replacing with #6 and re-crimp w/ an old Lee hand reloader. Rockdoc gave me the hint some years ago. They worked fine.

I can't imagine that such an operation would significantly raise the pressure so I doubt that safety would be an issue. I do wonder how the ballistics and accuracy of your experimental load would be affected. Be sure to take some of these to the pattern board and let us know the results. Take you digital camera with you.

PS My rook rifle project is nearing completion. Any Glenthorne Manor crows needing potting?
