I have to remove the butt stock from an Ithaca Flues SxS for refinishing. The screws are easily removed, but the trigger plate won't budge from the action. All the screws are out, including the one under the top lever.

Many SxS's have a screw at the front of the trigger plate, right under the water table, but this one doesn't. There at a couple of pins on the side of the action, but these are for the hammers and sears.

In my Ithaca book, there are side view pictures of a Flues receiver with the trigger plate off. My question is if there's a trick to getting it off, or is mine just stuck on tight after 83 yrs (made in 1924).

If anyone has a schematic or experience, I'd like to hear from them before I try any strong arm methods. It's a nice old gun - one broken part & it's just another pile of junk!

Ron:

Take a small brass hammer or soft mallet or sorts and tap on the trigger plate in place and it will usually begin to yield. Is the safety difficult to move?

Raimey,
Nope, the safety and gun function normally. I'll try some gentle tapping.
Thanks, Ron

Ron:

Every one that I've disassembled was quite tight. As I thought, there is a tongue, or the like, on the trigger plate that slides into a grove at the top of the circle on the receiver. Also, watch for a small spring that works against the trigger plate which works the cylinder that keeps the toplever to the right when breached. Upon assembly, it is crucial to have the safety to mate the top tang correctly or you will be taking it apart again.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for the help.

It turned out I had not noticed the screw that's almost hidden by the trigger guard. My trigger guard will turn 90 degrees and then hit on the front trigger at the base and at the tip. There's no way to spring the guard to clear the trigger, but I carefully backed out the screw & got the Flues apart in just a couple of minutes. 80 yrs of dirt inside the action and it still worked! Now the refinishing can begin.

If you pull the front trigger the guard will clear it. DON'T lose the little spring!
