I think people who like this stuff also enjoy limburger cheese.

Does limburger work well on vintage guns ? ROTGALMAO. jOe, what is it you think you're missing out on with regard to oil properties? My guess is that the oil has a long non-gumming life. That may be an advantage in the lockwork of a gun if the modern synthetics won't go the needed distance. But I bet that the proper synthetics today will go the necessary distance/time. I worked in the nuc biz for quite a while, albeit in the enrichment end, but I can't think of what they'd us oil on in a nuc. I asked my wife who worked specifically at Rocky Flats in the PU boxes (pun) as an engineer, she's not aware of what would use oils. But, what the hey, there a many different types of nucs.

Go to your local GM dealer Joe and you will find that they have a synthetic oil that works as well as whale oil. I don't know if you would want to put it on a gun. Then again, I don't know if I would want to put whale oil on a gun either.

The original Automatic transmissions used whale oil according to what I have read, discussion of this on Ed's Red site I believe. Very soon GM produced their "Dextron" ATF as a whale oil substitute, a component used in Ed's Red.

I use Beeman MP-5 oil (pat. 9205-04) "the top rated formula in lab and field tests for prevention of corrosion. It's metalophilic (MP), polarized molecules seek metal..... Lubricates and protects Neutralizes sweat and salt Penetrates into smallest crevices Dries to thin, non-gumming, lubricating film which lasts through indefinite storage Harmless to steel, non-ferrous metals, wood, seals and leather. DO NOT USE IN COMPRESSION CHAMBER OF SPRING PISTON AIRGUNS." I used this stuff for some 5 years and it does seem to work. I apply it with q-tip leave it for 12-24hrs then simply brush off excess with natural hair paint brush and I'm done. I'm careful not to get any on wood. Unlike that liquid shoe polish Clenzoil it has much less offensive odor to it.

It was the original ATF, If you have a late 40's or early 50's automatic transmission laying around it is full of the stuff. bill

So, we could guess that the valued properties are high lubricity, viscosity stability with temperature, low oxidation rate, and good chemical stability. I'd bet that all of these properties have been superceeded by more modern oils. Price and unavilability is not the reason for change in industry - if it was really that good, we would see full scale whale farming.
It was probably the best of its time, and old knowledge dies slowly.
