Sorry for posting on this here but you all have some pretty deep knowledge of custom and unusual gun stuff. Anyway, I find myself in the market for a .243 cal. rifle.
A local gun dealer has a Shilen DGA w/22" barrel on a plain walnut hunting stock. Nice condition. No sights but appears ready to accept a scope. Apparently a toy some poor guy didn't live to use. I have found out a bit from the Blue Book and from a Google search it appears that Shilen custom made about 3,500 high grade guns. Anyone add anything? Suggestions on value? Regards, Jake

DGA stands for 'dam* good action' .. and they are. A 22" bbl may have been set back one thread & cut as the std. bbl length was 24". You could contact Shillen & see if they have a record of the gun's original configuration.

Also, it is a good idea to be sure it will chamber & feed a factory round loaded with the heaviest [longest] bullet you wish to shoot. There is a slight chance it has a 'tight neck' or even a 'no neck' chamber &/or a short throat and if it does you want to know that before buying it.

That's mighty fine stuff in my book. I recall a .308 Sporter that sounds like a twin to the .243 that you've described. 22" sporter weight barrel, plain walnut stock of a kind of racy design, possibly not checkered...can't remember.....a tack driver...I do remember that!! Equal to the Alpha's and Wichita Sporters that I've owned in the accuracy department. My guess would be in the $900-$1300 range.

Best,
Ken

Craig, I had a DGA in 22 250 - wonderfully accurate gun. Check the trigger out to see which configuration it has. Some of the guns were sold with 2 oz. triggers. Some were hunting weight triggers. The wood on my gun was pretty plain as well but nicely fit to action and barrel. As was mentioned mine also had 24" barrel. A call to Shilen with the serial # would reveal much. I would buy another DGA in a heartbeat. Best, Slate
