Gee, thanks a lot, Marc. I go to your ABS site to check it out, and next thing I know I'm on some knifemakers website looking at something I absolutely cannot take my eyes off of... went back several times... and finally bought the damn thing. Merry Christmas to me. Wife, not so happy - this is gonna cost me twice the price I can just tell... Thanks Marc...

Fellows there is not a Damascus blade made that will hold an edge like a properly heat treated D2 blade. They can hammer hot iron till hell freezes over and not have a blade that I would want. I have made quite a number of working knives and it takes good sold material such as ATS-34 or D2 or CM154 to make a truely good knife.

My daughter works for Kershaw so that is what I'd get. It is a very good company and if you have a problem with a knife untill January 15th or so she is the one you should talk to. Several weeks later, I will become a grandfather. jas
Currently own two Morgan cars. Starting on Black Powder hunting to advoid the mob of riflemen.

It's interesting that there have been several steels listed as 'the best' for knives in this thread. They can't all be the best.
I don't use knives much, but let me ask what may be a dumb question - so what if knife doesn't hold an edge well? Doesn't that mean you just sharpen it more?

JayCee, thanks for the link to the Bill Moran obituary. The only correction is that Moran's shop and forge is in Middletown, Maryland, not Middletown, Virginia as the article states. It really doesn't matter that forged steel blades may or may not be superior to high quality Damascus. Various knifemaking groups and societies regularly have tests of makers work that helps to identify who is making the good stuff. Although I am not a knife person, I subscribed to Blade Magazine for several years so I know that not all Damascus is mediocre. Many modern knifemakers make their own Damascus, taking the mass produced blade factor out of the equation. I'm sure that anyone who makes his own Damascus has quite an interest in learning to do it right. Murphy

I have two Randall Made knives that were my grandpa's. They are great knives and pretty valuable. Randall Made

Bill thank you for the clarification.
After seeing in the ABS webpage the test a Damascus blade must pass, the real ones can hardly be considered mediocre. If you add the San Mai blades... Wish I had the means to get a couple.

OK, it's not Damascus. Not even a real expensive knife. It's a hand forged hunting knife with a buckeye burl grip. Basic, but after researching the maker it should prove to be a good value. This is the kind of thing that appeals to me in a knife. http://bladegallery.com/shopexd.asp?id=85371
