I have been busy in the last few weeks and have reached what I am afraid is a cross road. A horrible thought came across my mind that I have not been able to put aside. My gun room has all that I want or need. In fact the last three guns have so filled my wants that I just do not have anymore wants. I hope that it is just temporary, but I fear the worse. The end of the line for my double wants and needs. Shudder.
It started with a Lefever Nitro Special of all things. It is the nicest Nitro I have seen in years and is as close to unfired as I have seen. It is just a pristine basic economy gun, nothing special.
Then I bought a Lefever 20 E grade that I have been after for years. The same one that got by me while I was on vacation. Far from pristine, somewhat over priced, but still in decent shape and it just fits me well. I bought it bacause I figured that if they made 100 20 E grades this was still in the top third or better. And I just never see a 20 E grade with decent finish that has not been refinished at some point. It suited my need for a fast handling American classic small bore by Lefever. All that I could want in a well made and well used gun, and it killed the first four quail that I shot at. Two singles and a true pair.
And the last gun to arive is a Fox A grade that has been restocked, refinished and had a second set of barrels added. The workmanship, by an unknown craftsman(s), is perfect. Absolutely perfect. Fox, Becker and and even Uncle Dan did no better. It is humbling to an old hacker. It has short barrels and long ones, 26" & 32", barrels for quail and waterfowl. In fact next month I intend to take it into a goose pit and bring home the Christmas goose.
But as I sit here, I confess that for the first time in many years, I have no interest in looking for more guns. No desire to have one more double. No wants or needs for more or better or extras. It is scarry. In fact it may cause the used gun market to drop 15-20% overnight. So learn from my mistakes. Do not buy too many nice guns. Do not buy two or three guns in a row that just are too perfect. Satisfaction is a bitter pill to swallow for an accumulator like me. Buy a few Klunkers and be happy.
