Volvo XC AWD wagons. 8" of ground clearance with Volvo skid plate under the entire front end, goes about 90% of where I used to take my Jeep Cherokee but much safer off and on road and so much more comfortable and reliable. We have his and hers.

This summer after heavy rains and run off, went over a farm path culvert over a drainage ditch. The water flow had completely washed out the earth around the 6' culvert with only about 2-3" of top soil left. Went completely through so the vehicle was suspended by the front skid plate and the wheels were hanging in 4' of space. Hitched up tractor to the rear hitch and popped the Volvo out. Only damage was one broken off mud flap! These are tough vehicles!
