Posted these over on the Parker BBS and somebody suggested that I post them over here as well. I was shooting with my infamous beater DHE Parker. Since I was behind the camera you don't get much double gun action in the photos but it was happening.

Jim and Nathan hard at work in my old wooden sneak boat, Detroit River style circa 1930's.

Was windy that day and the waves were high. You can just see a big wave breaking over the screen/sail. I'm shooting the pictures from the big cover boat that we had anchored so the off man would have a place to sit between sneaks. The waves were beating it so hard that we broke the front anchor line twice.

Jim and Nathan fighting a roller, pumping the boat out for another run.

Was a good morning, we had mostly canvasback with a sprinkling of redheads and broadbill.

Little better view of the bag without my extra large carcass in the way. Cans on the right and middle, redheads middle left, and broadbill far left. Some of these are from the day before when Don Kaas was shooting with us. Before anybody pipes up and asks, this was in Canada and the canvasback limit is four per day per man so we were well within the limit.

This is by far my favorite kind of gunning. You can only do it when it's just right but those days make for rare sport. My sneaking rig is all cork and wood birds, some old and some new. I go as old school as I can go with it other than on clothing, I do break down and wear modern wet weather gear.

Now THAT is really livin'!!! ;~`)Wonderful boats and locale.

Nothing quite so invigorating as fine day like the one you photo'd.

If have not already found the following site, then hop on over there. Dey yare a foine buncha webfeet fanatics, and Boats R M. Lots of 'em from around the West End of Lake Erie and St Clair flats. Beware of Duck Camp Viking Chili, however, should you ever hook up to hunt with the Pool Six gang over on the Big Muddy.

Usta hang my hat there, but currently find that a canoe, a doz dekes and a Chessie suit me, on the Upper Reachs of the Maumee River. Still, the yen for a good boat never leaves waterfowlers, nor does one's affection for a suitable gun.

Relax; we're all experts here.

I second the suggestion for the duck hunters boat page. This site inspired me to make my owns decoys and build boats. Very additictive.

Great pictures. Thanks for the very cool update. I had a Brant II sneak boat that I had a lot of success in, sold it and am in the process of building another currently. Sculling/sneaking is a fun and very different way to hunt.

After looking at those pictures I concluded that sneak boating certainly is not for girly-men. The one where they are standing in water up to their waist trying to get the boat ready was particulary impressive. How does one get in without tipping the boat? What is the temperature of the water and the air? Does a big wave ever swamp that low wall boat? What is the average IQ of sneak boaters?

Best,

Mike

I think you guys are crazy too! But, I sure would love to try it. It looks like a lot of fun. Those are great pictures!
So what do you do with the Canvasbacks, I've been told they aren't that great toeat, though I've never had one myself.

Destry,

Looks like cold soggy fun. Nice photos. Haven't hunter waterfowl for about 5 years. I must get back to it. Recently purchase a parker 10ga, wih 32" barrels. I'm going to call Morris at RST today, and get fixed up with shells.

Canvasbacks not good to eat? That is the craziest thing I have ever heard. They are the BEST duck to eat, bar none. I have deep fried them instead of turkeys after plucking them. WOW! YUM!

In the market hunting days, they were the most expensive ducks and almost hunted out of existance because of the bird's value as tablefare.

Right on Coryreb, they sold for about 10X what mallards sold for.
This thread makes me wish we could hunt open water here in the interior, but we must be anchored in emergent vegetation.

I didn't know in North Dakota you could not layout hunt. The scull boat is still alive and well here in the mid west.
