One simply has to wonder how a cast iron or Hardened steel shaft can wear while runnng in "Soft" Babbit, yet they most certainly do.
Personally there are "Five" methods I would consider for putting a gun of mine back on face; #1- Shim the thing, #2- replace the pin, #3- Tig the hook, #4 fit an insert in hook, #5- Tighten the ball screw (Lefever Only).
The choice would depend "Soley" on the individual gun in question. I would not spend $300+ on a 12ga Crescent or JABC though I might have one, which for whatever reason I desired to shoot occasionally (It would likely get a shim). Replacing the pin would be my next choice if feasibale. (It's not always). Last I would build up the hook by either of the methods mentioned.
Sometimes practicality has to take precidence over "Ultimate Theory".

I apologize. I reviewed my posts and I did state that a 90 degree standing breach would impead closing the gun. This is not the case. My correct quote from JACGMG is paraphrased here, "88.5 degrees allow sufficient room to open & close the action."

Apology graciously accepted. I do not believe there would ever be a desire to tilt a breech forward enough that actual opening of the gun would be impeded. As the gun opens there of course needs to be clearence enough for the extractors to work, but this 88½° angle should still allow ample room for that. I highly suspect the actual reason for the slight angle forward has to do with frame flexure upon firing. Did they perhaps go into this, would be interested in knowing what they say along that line.
