Watching the last of the red hot embers of the Christmas fire go to cold ash, put a chill in the air, even with a mug of warm mulled cider in my hands. What am I going to do now? All fall long I shot & hunted, almost every weekend. Got to gear back a little I guess, but also have a few things planned too - they'll be a couple of goose hunts in January and maybe a crow or two mixed in...but thats about it. The excitement of Labor Day's openings is long gone. Going into the dead of winter calls for your favorte guns to be brought out once again, this time by the fireplace. Prolly my favorite time with the F Beesley, and what a perfect time to wax it - with the smell of burning oak through-out the house. Its going to be dark cold times ahead lads!

To me the smell of burning oak and ren wax to wax some of my favorite doubles does not mean a long cold winter. It's time to visit with those doubles that have been sitting for awhile. These times can be golden. Just my opinion, Regards Gordon

Up here (wisconsin), we have grouse season until january 31. I'll walk the woods as much as my busy life allows. One big plus is the days are again getting longer. God how I hate the dark days from Thanksgiving until December 21.

What, Thorny, no rabbits, hares, squirrels or empty cans that need a hole or three plinked into them? The long cold nights bring Brunswick stew, or, humble pie, depending on who's doing the shooting.
Next semi-warm January afternoon, grab a kid, several .22s, a brick of something cheap and several hole worthy targets and head out into the sunshine. With introductions come rebirth, trust me. Best, Ted

I will shoot until late Feb or early March. After the game season a couple of preserve hunts for final work with the dogs. A few coyotes will be targeted and then it is time to clean guns, gear, and other supporting items (e.g. my hunting vehicle!) I'll plan for the fall hunts, send deposits and order the gear I wish I had ordered for this year. After all is done I will grab my fishing rod and go after bass, bream, crappie and trout. After all, fishing season starts the day after hunting season ends!

Chilly and wet tonight down here, but we'll have mild weather throughout the winter, and the best hunting of the year to come. Deer hunter plague will be gone in a couple of weeks, and the woods'll be safe to wander with bird-dog or squirrel gun. I've a puppy to train and some good guns that need to be shot...Geo

Lowell,
Allow some light into the manor, have your man place another log on the andirons, give the clinkers a stir and a few breaths from the bellows whilst you venture forth near the copses & up the dells for brair rabbit and his cuz, the hare. Should they prove absent, you might look into starting a programme to remedy that for future seasons. One can only have his goose cooked & eat crow but so many times.
From your description, one would think Glennthorne Woods locus closer to Mordor than MO.

Thanks for some good cheer lads! There's a road that needs some mending(sapplings and over-growth have taken over), but I'll leave the bunnies to do, what they do best. These days it is quiet in those "Woods," maybe only a shot ot two from the slews by the Missouri River. Or! the Christmas day guns. You've given me hope, and I'll not put the huntin' woolens away yet.

Still have a few more days of pheasants, another month of grouse and two months of bunny hunting. Also have crows from mid Jan. to mid March, then just another month and turkeys open. In between have pasture clays. Now that covers shotguns, lots of rifle shooting to do too. Gosh I love winter, now if you believe that I have this 4 gauge mint Parker for sale cheap.

I like the winter, too. I can't imagine not... Before long we'll all be bitchin' about how hot and humid it is and the mosquitos.
