I recently met a person on a forum like this only with regard to Porsche automobiles. At times the topics in the OT part of the forum the discussions include hunting, fishing, and guns. In a discussion about deer hunting and what affordable gun he could buy, I suggested he buy my 1903 Springfield 30-06. He is a long time poster, as I am in this forum and I recognized his ID , as he did mine. Well he contacted me off the forum and wants to purchase it. He is driving from Maryland to PA to come and get it. Have I broken any laws yet? Can I legally sell it to him? Help me sleep better tonight.

Thanks...

You can sell and transfer to a buyer only from your own state if they are not prohibited from buying. Out of state sales need to go through a FFL. Quick fix to your problem is to take him to your local FFL dealer and have him handle the transfer and FFL paper work. Split the cost of the FFL transfer or settle as you like. This way you are both covered, you mainly.

OK I have to ask.
What does 30-06 stand for?

If it stands for what I think it does how could one have been made in 1903?

That could work as I am having him meet me at a gun show at a local sportsman's club. I have a table there and know most of the FFL dealers there. They could just do it there for me.

30-06 is a rifle...sorry it's OT.

The 1903 Springfield was developed in that year. It originally fired a 30-03, 30 cal. dev 1903.It was upgraded to a 30-06 or 30 cal dev 1906. Main diff. lighter grain bullet better shape.

Subgauge: 1903 is a model name based on year of introduction, not, in this case, the year his rifle was built (just like I own an 1886 Winchester built in 1921). Although counterintuitive, the vast majority of 1903s were chambered for the improved .30-06 cartridge introduced for the Army in 1906. TT
