We had an old guy show up at our gun club one day with his gun modified. He had taken the largest eye off of a deep sea fishing rod and had duct taped it onto the rib of his shotgun so he could keep his eye on the targets better when he shot trap. Of course he only did it for a joke.

My own favorites aren't doublegun felonies, but common misdemeanors anyway. I have a Colt New Service .45 LC that is near mint except that someone cut the (originally 7 1/2") barrel off to 2 1/2" and installed a Williams Shorty Ramp with gold bead. Shoots OK but what a waste!

I once tried to talk a "gunsmith" out of pulling the barrel from an original Win Hi-Wall 1885 .30-40 because it was "shot out". Actually it had about 1" of roughness in the grooves just in front of the chamber--really "frosting" not pits. He pulled it anyway and gave it to me and replaced it with a cut-off, re-threaded, and rechambered 2-groove Springfield barrel. Instant abortion "WinSpringKrabean." The good news is, I saved the Krag barrel and put it on an orphaned Hi-Wall action (yes, you could find those about 40 years ago) and have been shooting the heck out of it ever since; one of my favorite rifles. I guess the moral is "SHOOT it before you "FIX" it".....

I don't know what to call it: I was invited to hunt with the vice-president of a national hunting organization who lit his pipe in the blind by striking a match on the checkering of his Model 12 and couldn't stop shooting when he reached his limit. Needless to say, he didn't make president. I didn't tell him why.

Hey dubbletrubble, you like stupid criminal stories? You know what's even funnier than stupid criminal stories? Stupid police stories. Here's one I forgot about: In January of last year, The Butler County Sheriff Departmant's SWAT team from Butler County, Ohio was practicing a drill on a Monday afternoon in a school parking lot. After their drill, one of the officers leaned his rifle (I heard it was a full auto M-16) against his car while he loaded up his equipment. Then he drove off and left the rifle laying in the parking lot. One of the kids on the basketball team found it laying in the parking lot. Such is a typical day in the lives of our local Sheriff's Department. Passing one's literacy exam has never been one of the requirements for obtaining a badge in this neck of the woods.
