Two Triggers
I thought that they were specifically M1903 not just 1903, am I wrong?

Wether the states are adjoining or not does not matter,,an unlicensed (nonFFL) can not legally sell a firearm to a nonFFL resident of another state.

The 'adjoning states' wording was part of the original GCA68 whereby FFL's could legaly sell a long gun over the counter to a nonFFL resident of an adjoining state only. That has been changed ('86) so that an FFL may sell a longgun to a resident of any state in an over the counter sale as long as both states' laws allow the transfer.

The original round that the 1903 Springfield bolt action rifle was chambered for was the 30-03,,updated in case redesign to the 30-06. I think a different weight bullet too. Most all of the original military rifles were rechambered that were already out in the field. I think Winchester used to chamber the 1895 lever gun and the HighWall single shot in 30-03. Then later changed the chamberings to the updated dimentions and name.

Ok that settles it. I will save him the trip and ship it FFL to FFL. I feel much more comfortable with that anyway. Thank you all for the good advice.

If he has easy access to a FFL like he says then only an idot would try to skirt the law. Election years are not the years that you want to be the whipping boy for the anti gun people trying to make an example of those who skirt the "reasonable and very simple to follow" gun laws. Cover your you know what with paperwork when ever you can these days is sound advise. Also following the law is right smart while you are at it. JMO

As originally issued the M 1903 service rifle fired the .30-03 cartridge which used a 220 gr roundnose bullet @ 2300 fps. In 1906 the cartridge was changed to the .30-06 which used a 150 gr spitzer bullet @ 2700 fps. To accomadate the shorter bearing length of the new bullet the neck of the case was shortened, to the best of my recollection all other case dimensions remained the same. The bullet seat (throat) in the chamber was also shortened. Most bbls of existing guns were shortened from the breech enough to allow re-cutting the chamber to the new dimensions. About the only rifles one is apt to find today chambered for the .30-03 would be one of the above mentioned Winchesters.

Do what you want but there is no legal requirement for a FFL on your end,the buyers end on in interstate sale requires the FFL not the seller.

It seems this thread, took a tangent from the original question! I just thought I would add a piece of trivia. The .270 Win. is a necked down 30-03, instead of the 30-06. THe only difference is the 03 had a .050" longer neck.

You could transfer it at the gunshow. Just have one of the FFLs from his state do it. I have done this before several times. Nothing illegal that I have ever heard of.
