Hello Guys and Gals...

What is your take on the Sako 75, and in particular the 300WBY magnum.

The 300 Wby is no woods rifle, and way too much for deer, but about perfect for big things like Elk.
If Elk isn't on the ticket, there are much better cartridges.
Sako is a good make, but don't know the M75.

Sako75 is one of the best rifles for the money.
Can't say the same about 300WBY and 300Win magnums. Too powerfull ammo and not enough bullet diameter at the same time. It's very hard to choose bullet type for particular game in this mag calibers.

Why are the 300 Weatherby and Win mag not woods rifles? I can never understand this. Dead is dead, I'm not going to buy a Savage 99 in 300 Savage just because some hack writing in a gun magazine tells me to do so because this is the ideal woods rifle. Also how can you be overgunned for deer? Please tell me. Undergunned, yes, like a 250 Savage, 22-250, 25-35 Win. I use a 9.3x62 for everything, beware of the man who uses one rifle, he probably knows how to shoot it.
This does not apply to shotguns at all, of course, absolutely not, good heavens, the man with the safe full of SXS shotguns is a contented soul. Right?

Mike I suppose a 300 Mag (weatherby espeically) has such a huge impact velocity at close ranges one wonders how a bullet can hold together at close range and still expand at ranges a Magnum is more suited to the damage done to the animal does ruin a lot of meat lets call it Hydraulic shock even the premium hunting bullets at close ranges must act like a .22 calibre varmit bullet and blow up
but I do have to agree dead is dead and there is no such thing as to big a calibre but I find the 300 magnums (never fired a weatherby) to be a little to sharp in the recoil department adn I personally find them unpleasent to shoot so they are to much rilfe for the average Joe to try and shoot with most people would be better served with a nice 30/06
as for the 9.3x62 now your talking I have one and love it terminal performance not far short of a 375 H&H and kicks a bit more than a 30/06 what a fantastic calibre (for others on the board who may never have heard of it this round it is a bit of a pup it is just coming onto 100 years of age )
is it just me or has everybody all over the world gone a bit velocity mad? even shotgun ammo has reached speeds that really makes me wonder why? for over 100 years big heavy bullets at moderate velocity has killed game all over the world and will continue to do so for another 100 magnums have there place on the open plains where there flat shooting can be used to great effect but for shooting out to 100-150 yards do you relly need one?

I almost bought a Weatherby rifle from 1950s (FN Mauser action), but didn't, because it was chambered for .300WeaMag. It was a beauty, and it shouldered just like my old Steyr-Mannlicher 7x57. If it was a .375H&H I would have bought it on the spot! My favorite Sakos are those made around FN Mauser action. I would have bought a minty .375H&H, if I didn't already own a big Heym in that caliber. That's ok, one of the boys from Accurate Reloading got it for only $850, and that was a bargain. Sakos? There isn't a bad, but the older ones had a bit more old world charm about them. I don't care for the new "Sakottas", there were a some caboooooms with few of them.

Perhaps Mike, you've never shot a deer with the 300 mags.
Dead is dead, but they make a terrible mess of a game animal at short range.

The 300 Win(Wea) are both excellent rounds! I've taken many larger bodied game with the 300 Win (moose, elk, caribou, etc)and it works great. I've also taken many deer with one. The bloodshot meat I have to trim off a deer shot with the 300 is excessive and unacceptable to me now days. I've come to the conclusion from field experience that a rifle such as the 9.3x62 (I have a 35Whelan improved which is very similar to the 9.3)with the larger slower bullets kill just as dead and don't do nearly the damage as the faster lighter bullets the larger 30 cals do. As far as the Sako 75, I can't say, but I had an old Sako in 375 H&H that was a sweet rifle with the best trigger this side of the old model 70's.

Mike, I have used the .300mag on deer several times and sold the gun because it was too wasteful. Dead is dead, but inedible is waste - plus the gun was unpleasant to carry and very unpleasant to shoot. And a .250 Savage, or .270 Win will both do an excellent job on deer, but don't try to make the .250 a long range gun. I have taken more deer with a .32Win Special (model 94) than any other - but I use it within its range under 100yds. And you are right, "dead is dead" so what does shredding it do for you?

If I had to do it again this is what I would buy for heavy NA game: Just add 2-8xcompact
PS. I had .300WinMag before going to .375H&H, it is a great cartridge, best suited to shooting ranges well above most hunters capabilities under field conditions! Now, .300Imperial, .300WeaMag, .300RUM, that.... :o
