Then these barrels were grafted onto the hammer gun as the patent Michael connected me to was for a hammerless drilling.
Does anyone know when serial 22274 was made?
My Dad bought this along with some other guns from a widow back in the late seventies. I inherited it along with some other guns.
Thanks for the link Michael.
Best,
Mike

Mike: I've shot them in 10 and 12 bore, but I haven't seen a 16 bore as of yet. Does it have Diana(?), goddess of the hunt, on the butt plate? Have a gander a revdocdrew's site at: http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=17575181 . PeteM or revdocdrew will be along shortly to set us straight. Kind Regards, Raimey rse

The buttplate is gone and a JC Higgins pad has been screwed onto the butt.
Upon closer inspection the barrels have the serial number of the gun and match the fences. They really don't look like they have been grafted on.
Thanks for the reply ellenbr.
Best,
Mike

Note this patent is for the locks, not the bbls. In the Specifications Pieper states, this improvement is "particularly" suited to guns having Three bbls, though parts of it may be applied to guns having One or Two bbls if desired. I seriously doubt any part of this gun was ever a part of a drilling. The "Pieper Breech" was Piepers name for his "Mono-Block" which he patented Aug 23, 1881 US patent #246,195. A look at this patent will show bbl construction very similar at least to this gun. It must also be remembered that makers (Firearms as well as others) often stamped patent dates & numbers of any patent they onwed upon their products, even though sometimes they were not directly applicable to the model upon which stamped. I suspect they just thought the patents appeared "Impressive".
