Thanks for posting the pictures. Most people have not seen the actual process before. Next time you are need a new "furnace", look for a used ceramics kiln. I know a couple of commercial operations that use them.

Are you preheating the bone charcoal?

thanks for the advice. I actually just bought a new furnace last month from Brownells with a 2' square chamber, this one is actually just a kiln. The electrician just finished wiring it in so I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but it looks good.

I haven't been pre-heating the charcoal, but I do put the parts in a cold furnace and bring them up to the 1500 degree temp as the furnace heats up (about 40 minutes to get to temp). My students and I experiment with different charcoal ratios, furnace and quench temps, and quenching techniques. I am hoping to discover what variables change certain colors and learn a bit more on the subject. We have also been experimenting with charcoal blueing in the same mannor.
