Is there a source for examples of these "standard" names for the different engraving designs? I have heard of others such as Greek Key, Maze, etc and would like to know their names and what they look like.

You may want to buy The Art of Engraving: A Book of Engraving. About $48.00 on Amazon.

Here's a pretty good example of Rose and Scroll. It will be on my table in Vegas. ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/bgfco/P1000264.jpg)

Daryl: I believe your example is more precisely "Bouquet & Scroll"; the early Parker Pigeon Guns engraved by Henry Gough were classic Rose and Scroll. There's a chapter in my new book about this, and it's interesting to note that engravers at James Purdey's did not "invent" the pattern. It goes back to the early days of the Koran when the religon dictated that no animal life could be depicted, thus the emphasis on vines and flowers and geometric patterns. The more liberalized Muslim interpetation of late--under penalty of death--is that only Mohammed is not to be pictured, especially in Danish cartoons. Nice gun; I'd like to post similiar pictures, but I don't want to deal with 3rd-party storage; also, is there no Spel-check here? EDM

EDM, so you are saying a bouquet of roses are not roses ? Frankly I do not remember seeing only a single rose with scroll. Maybe you can still your thoughts on "third party storage" , acutally it's not hard, and show us.

that is really nice rose and scroll.some people think the english came up with it to mimic the damascus pattern on the barrel.the english were first to use the patern throughout the gun trade.

The national flower of England happens to be the rose.

![](http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa320/general_orry_main/21_scroll.jpg) What would you call the engraving on these American guns ... some type scroll with a dog thrown in? ![](http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa320/general_orry_main/Holland_scroll.jpg) On an English gun, is this considered Acanthus scroll?

I would love to see the Rose 'n Scroll on a Parker - most are primitive folk art.
