I am about to attempt to make my own Alkanet oil. I have read on one of the threads here (in the archives) that you should either steep or boil the root in alcohol, then combine the mixture with some boiled linseed oil and/or tung oil. Is the type of alcohol important? I mean can I hit Wally world for some Rubbing alcohol or should I get some denatured stuff? Maybe I can try some Grey Goose as well?

Thanks in advance!!

Lord Mr. Steve --- Don't try boiling that stuff. I'd be afraid of fire or even an explosion. I used 90% alcohol from walleyworld, put alkanet root in bottle and allowed to set for a week or so. Ken

PLEASE Heed the advice from Mr. Hurst. The probability of a fire, a very, very hot fire is extremely high especially if a gas stove or source of ignition is near. Ever have Steak Diane? That is a low grade drinking alcohol and it is a high temp flame.

Steve,

Yes, the type of alcohol is important; but I can't tell you what to use. I know that rubbing alcohol is more likely to be a 70/30 mix of isopropanol (IPA) and water than it is pure IPA. Surely the 70% stuff won't mix with linseed oil. Likewise, neither pure methanol nor denatured alcohol (ethanol made toxic with methanol or other additives) will mix with linseed oil. Possibly 99% pure isopropanol is soluble in linseed oil; don't know, don't have any on hand. But, if you're going to go looking for an "alcohol" to use, search for pure IPA.

As to the Grey Goose. I suppose it will have its place in the process as well. Jake

+1, you can't go wrong with a little bit of class to celebrate the whole process when it's completed.

Skip the alchohol, just powder the root in a blender and simmer it in the linseed oil for 20 or 30 minutes. Strain and pour.

Boiled or raw linseed oil? And, Could I use mineral spirits and/or turpentine to thin it out if needed?

I use boiled, and sure, you can use either to thin it.

Hello Steve,

Did as per Hansli's instructions and the oil (BLO) has a very nice red/brown sheen.

He even sent the alkanet root! :-)

JC

P.S.: I would heed advise about boiling alcohol. jc
