I almost hesitate to post this here. In the past anything asking for support to stop gun control in Illinois has lead to some less than helpful posts.
However, this approach is deadly. Neither the NRA nor the ISRA seem to be ready or able to take it on with full force. It is not National nor Statewide, so....

The first, which is called the "Safe Streets/Weapons Registration Ordinance” , claims to simply require the registration of all firearms and firearm owners in Cook County. http://www.isra.org/cook_county/12042007-beavers-registration-290841.html
As written, however, it is an outright ban of all firearms and ammunition. Even if you do not live in Cook County, this proposal will have a dramatic impact on you due to new restrictions on transporting firearms. Remember, O'Hare Airport is in Cook County.

The second proposed ordinance would amend the county's “Deadly Weapon Dealers Ordinance.”
http://www.isra.org/cook_county/12042007-suffredin-290839.html
It seeks to completely ban all gun shows within the county, and prohibits federally licensed dealers from operating within 10 miles of another federally licensed dealer or 1 mile of a park, church or school. This will not only prohibit new gun stores, but could wipe out most existing ones.

Illinois State Rifle Association http://www.isra.org/ has just gotten around to sending out a mailer about this. From my perspective, they have been very unorganized in this whole matter.

If these laws are passed, you can be sure they will be coming to a county near you soon! To voice opposition to these proposed laws, the only recourse is to call and leave a polite message http://www.co.cook.il.us/commissioners.htm

Oh, by the way. Cocking indicators will automatically make a gun illegal according to these laws.

Pete, you know some areas of the country are just lost.
I think Chicagoland is one, nothing new here laddie!
Welcome to the New World Order!
Come over to Missouri, we've passed all sorts of deadly force bills, and handguns are like buying a gallon of milk at the 7/11.

Pete, I feel the helplessness of the situation. Could you give a sample of a message you think would be fitting ?

That is one ugly gun ban. I noticed the severability section, they know some of the extreme language is challengable.

I wonder what could be said to sway the Cook Co. board? Telling them I won't travel through Chicago with guns will probably make them happy.

Not that it means a hoot, but I think the cocking indicator section says the opposite of what you wrote. I think it says that only handguns with cocking indicators are registerable. Thus excluding all revolvers and most pistols.

I'm under nearly the same level of oppression, and was basically forced to buy property outside the city so I could continue this wonderful hobby. It sucks. And FWIW, so does Rudy effing Guiliani.

I'm not sure if this is just one more example with how out of touch the one part of our state is with another, but there is exactly zero chance that they will be coming to my county down here. No one would have the idea to begin with, and if they did it would be a non-starter with the county board...

When the cultural misfits start to burn your car, I sure hope you have a long enough garden hose?
Me...I'll reach for my rifle!
This shouldn't have come to such a shock to you Pete, I saw this coming years ago at a CADA show in Villa Park/Elmhurst or whatever.

Daryl,

When I called several of the board members I simply stated, "I am a law abiding hunter and collector. I urge you not to this legislation, it would turn all those who pursue these activities into felons."

Keep it very simple. They are not listening to the message, they are counting them. You never have to mention where you reside! We have had a good number of our neighbors in Wisconsin calling in.

Cabela's which recently opened here has drafted a petition and has it available in their store. Which is more than some organizations have done.

I refuse to believe that the issue is lost, even if it passes the county board. They will find themselves in appeallate court.

This is mainly work of a single individual, Suffredin, who wants to run for States Attorney.

Pete

Are you just calling the main phone number or a specific office?

The political machine within Cook County and subsequently the great State of Illinois rams these laws down the vast majority of the citizens of Illinois' throats. Unless you can change this 'Machine' which seems highly doubtful your only recourse is the Federal courts. What else is there to say? And what other options do you have?
All the best

At this point, all 17 commissioners and the board president. Really hoping that at least the ISRA will organize an action. I know a lot of people who have already called.
