I used ground alkanet root purchased over the internet and alcohol that I bought in the paint supply section of Home Depot. I made up a bunch several years ago and it's still fine to use today. I first strip off the old finish with Wonko's brew, do whatever sanding etc that is required and then apply the stain, a coat at a time, until the wood looks right and then follow up with Tru-Oil. I use 0000 steel wool between Tru-Oil applications as well as a light steel wool rub when I'm done to give it a satin finish.
