I have a 3 barrel (side by side 16 Ga on top with a rifle barrel under)that my Pop brought back from Germany where he was serving during WW2. It was made by Simson & Co. SUHL (top of barrel) with a serial number 4155. It has exposed hammers, a 26" barrel and 42" overall length. Not sure what the rifle caliber is but seem to remember Pop as having said it was a 45. Under the barrels there are a couple markings that look like birds and crowns and also a 67/49. I would like to find out as much as I can about the gun and what it might be worth. Thanks.

Hello Bobby and welcome to The Board,

The best way for you to get info is to post pictures of the barrel flats and
water table, where all the proofmarks are. Also of the action and general
view of your gun.

Go to FAQ for instructions on posting photos.

I did look at the FAQs but I don't have a website where I could put photos. I do have some digital pictures although I can't get a good picture of the proofmarks with my camera.

67/49 means .410 bore (land) of rifled bbl. Caliber probably something around 10,75 mm, maybe 10,75x58R

The diameter of the rifle barrel is about 1/2 inch if that helps.

Here is a link to the site where I did find out a little about Simson & Co. SUHL.

IMHO DO A CHAMBER CAST.AND SLUG THE BARREL. The german gun collectors assn. can give you lots of information on your Simpson.
The Simpson story is quite interesting. A Jewish family busness
that made high quality guns. They were forced out by the Nazis. many of the family are in the USA. The Simpson name was still attached to some guns made in east Germany after the war and might still be. Most likely Your drilling has A buffalo horn
trigger guard and butplate. BP Proof ?

Bobby, send me the photos and I'll post them up for you.

To get better pictures use some extra lighting, keep the camera very still and
use the macro feature on it (if it has it). Better even to use a tripod.

Geno Nailed the bore. 67/45 (67.49) is the "Gauge" of the bore dia. This as he says calculates to a dia of .410" or 10.4mm. This system is normally found on guns made prior to 1912. It is I think also worth noting that while this is for the bore dia as Geno sais, it also appears, to me at least, this may not always indicate an exact dia. Below 50ga (.453") it appears they used gauges in steps of .010" & marked the bbl according to the largest "Plug Gauge" it would accept. thus this bore would be at least .410", but not equaling to .420". As an example I have an 8x58½ S&S bbl on a drilling marked 172,45 (.300") which has a bore of about .308" & groove dia of about .320". All indications are this is the round for which the gun was factory chambered & a .300" bore would have been too small for an 8mm bullet, even a .318" one. Bore & chamber casts/slugging are the only real way of determing chambering for certain.
