What an interesting lockup this one has. I never seen this before. Nice wood, no checkering. It apparently does not have any proof marks? That would almost certainly rule out a European source for it.
I am sure some one will recognize this one...

I can't see the innards very well, but it favors an early Stevens..MDC

Possibly a Stevens 335 or whatever the proper designation for the hammerless version of the 235? The trigger plate screws and lock up/cocking mechanism look almost identical.

I guess I didn't realize a gun could be made in a factory and come out with out markings designating it as such. I'm sure it didn't come from the factory with stag/ivory butt plate and gripcap. Any thoughts?

Possible restock or at lease "customized".

That could explain the wood and buttplate but would a gun made in a US factory not have any markings? I guess I just assumed it was a custom gun of some sort.

I am pretty sure M.D. and Cary are right, it is an early Stevens. It looks like someone did some customizing, and engraved over the name on the frame sides, and the model # on the bottom, as well as re-stocking it.

Should barrels have something marked on them? Would I be able to use the serial# to date when the gun was manufactured from the stevens factory?

I think its just a Stevens that someone has gussied up. They could have polshed the name off in the process..or it could have missed the roll stamp in the factory. stranger things have happened.. If you send the serial number to Callahan (Savage historian), he may help, but I have my doubts..MDC
