It is mostly surface rust. The action is structurally healthy. As I mentioned, I am planning to do an electrolysis clean up of the rust and other crud. It may take another week before I can get to do it, but I'll definitely post pics of the cleaned action. It is now soaking in diesel to loosen the dried up grease. I have found hair inside, maybe those roaches reached deeper than you thought, jOe.

The outside pitting is probably as deep as the barrel markings as much as I can tell. The inside pits seem shallower...
On a similar note, my local gunsmith measured the barrel ID just before the chokes and found .656 instead of the .669 as stamped. The chokes were RB .646 and LB .639.
