I have come into a Merkel Model 8 12 ga. It is rather ugly in all ways and is missing the Greener top bolt. The gun locks tight and has been used this way for some time. This gun already two bites locking below. In anybody's real world opinion, are the Greener bolts really necessary and is it safe to shoot as is. This is not a gun I want to put any money into. BTW, I have a spare Mod 8 receiver I could cannibalize for parts if necessary, but would have to shop out the labor to a competent mechanic.

Have you contacted GSI in Alabama to see if they might have the part? Shouldn't cost an arm and/or leg, I see you don't want to spend $$ on it. They have a large service department there and stock many Merkel parts.

I have the part. Does the gun really need the part is the question. Re GSI: I have had multiple encounters over the past two years with GSI and I've got to say they are(for me anyway) a source of last resort ergo extra parts receiver.

If you have the part, why not put it back together and shoot the gun like it was designed to be. I must have missed something. It's not a difficult task, particularly since you have another receiver to look at the assembly method.
