If you are going the plywood route and make your own, how about those under the bed plastic storage containers with wheels. I wonder what size they come in. I would think you would use a soft case or sock on the gun in any case cause it will bounce and slide around.

A half inch sheet of plywood with an open span of 24" will support a person standing on it.
