to be the best all around chokes to have in a fixed choked gun for different types of upland hunting? (Mainly Dove and Quail)

My 28 Ga SxS with 28" barrels has fixed chokes of .022(RT) & .038(LEFT) which is really too tight.I would like to have them opened up but need some ideas of how much from your experiences.

Thanks for your help!!

I think IC and full is a nice combination for a 28 ga. hunting gun. Very versatile combination in larger gauge hunting guns, too. Our good friend Mike Orlen's choke numbers say .022" is full and .005" is IC, in a 28. If your measurements are accurate .038" is way overchoked in a 28. Most 12 ga guns don''t even have .038"(in a modern gun).

My opinion:

Right,cylinder for the quail.
Left, .015 for the dove.

Best,

Mike

Hello Jim,
I had the chokes measured today at Briley Mfg in Houston while I was there.

Thanks for your input

IC and IM. In my opinion, the best combination for all twice barrelled guns except skeet or trap dedicated sport guns.

This would be for all gauges.

perhaps on a short shooting 28 over pointers at locked tight quail, I would go with IC/M.

you can shoot steel out of IM, and you can get good distance from the IC.

what better?

Lots of good opinions, no doubt based on direct experience in their locales. For quail, I like a very open first shot and something like Mod or IM for the second. But if the gun is going to be used for dove, quail, chukar, grouse, and pheasant, I'd probably compromise and go with Jameister's suggestion of IC/IM for a two trigger gun and maybe IC/M for a single trigger gun.

I had Briley leave me w/ .011 in both barrels of a 28" 2 trigger SXS 28 ga.

Works great on both dove and quail w/ 5/8 (dove) or 3/4 (quail) oz loads of 7.5s.

I had my 28ga Parker Repro opened to skeet and mod for desert quail. That combination worked fine on dove as well. Just have to use the correct barrel for the shot length - hence two triggers.

My gun is a 28" Parker Repro but unfortunately it only has one trigger.

You might consider using some spreader loads. If you will pattern the gun with the spreaders, you will get an idea of the actual choke effect for each barrel. Then, you have a performance benchmark that can be matched by constriction changes.
