HJ, if firing pins are detonators, what are strikers? Are strikers firing pins, hammers, or something else?

Strikers=firing pins. Of course some strikers/firing pins are integral to the hammers, which can confuse things.

It gets really interesting when you delve into the same terms in another language--and I don't mean the difference between British vs American English, which is bad enough. Try French, for example. I had no problem with the dictionary definition of "les ailes" (wings), but I could not figure out what wings were doing on a shotgun. Turns out they're sideclips. And we agree on drop at heel, but to the French, what we call the toe of the stock is the beak (bec).

Raimey:

Kindly forgive the umbrage taken. I have trouble recalling and articulating what I do, or more properly should, know. Sort of like a geriatric doing a crossword to stay in touch with the old hard drive. I'm restraining the urge to discuss European metric calibers, a subject about which absolutely nothing is or was ever known by me.

Does the "detonating" have something to do with the Cockney penchant for word substitution: the part for the whole; the "do" for the "is"?
